between new, not as nice, but still comparable (brand, use, safety, etc.) gear
or
used nice, higher end (brand, use, safety, etc.) gear
which would you buy?

I guess it depends on what specifically I was buying. I guess I would opt for used, nice gear (aside from carseats).

I generally go for used but nice gear. It seems less wasteful in the long run and I get the gear I really want for a great price.

Are we talking about the difference between a new brand like Britax vs a used brand like Orbit? Not so nice makes me think the item is dirty or not in good shape.
It all ends up being about the price for me in the end. I doubt I could find a new Orbit stroller for the price of a new Britax stroller.
So, I'd probably go new, not top of the line for something like stroller and carseat. Used for most anything else. Brand doesn't matter to me for the most part unless I have found a brand that I love and can afford.

I find myself leaning towards used for most of my baby purchases that are reasonable to buy used. I go out of my way to find nicer used versions and I feel like most of the time I get a great deal for something that was barely used.

I would do used besides a carseat/mattress. Swing, bouncer, ect. are all fair game to buy used!

Usually we have bought used stuff but higher end.
For example, I only budgeted about $100 for a swing. Instead of getting a new one but a basic model, we found a practically brand new one (mamaroo) for that price.

New - I personally think a lot (not all, but a lot) of the high end items are more hype than superior design.

To me, it can just be easier buying something new vs. something used. For new items there's tons of places you can buy from, either in person or online. There's also a clear price/value for the item. For used stuff, it can be really hard to find exactly what you want. If you want a used mountain buggy (to borrow someone else's example) it's not like you can walk into any baby store and have one be available. Plus, when people sell used items the prices can be more subjective.
A couple weeks ago I was trying to buy a used bike trailer and it's just so much more of a hassle. But it's not something we're going to use a lot so I don't want to buy new.

I'm always looking for used gear (except cribs and carseats), especially baby stuff because I don't think mom's actually get that much use out of their stuff assuming 1) the baby didn't like it 2) the baby grew out of it too fast.... So many baby items have such a short window of use, unless it's a stroller or something.

It depends on if it's washable. Anything wooden, I'd prefer high-end used. If it's cloth and it'll get a lot of wear anyway, I'll always choose new.

Used, without any question. Much prefer to reuse things rather than be a reason for something new to be produced and use/waste more resources than necessary!

Depends what it is. Something like a stroller, which is really important to me living in the city, I wanted high end and would prefer a used good one to a new cheaper on. But something like a baby gate it's just so much less hassle to buy a new cheap one. I've done some of both and I'm finding some craigslist purchases are just not worth the time and energy to find them and clean them up to be used.

Like others, depends on what it is and what's the price diff. Price tends to drive my decisions a lot unless there's a significant difference between the two.

New, because a lot of the times, the warranty isn't transferrable.
