Is it all grass? Or landscaped with mulch beds?
Both our front and back yards have areas of mulch bedding. (I'm not a landscaper so I have no idea if I'm describing it correctly.) We think the mulching in the back yard is a bit much. Like half the back yard would need mulch, if we kept up on it. We want to convert more of it to regular grass for our dogs to run. I'm fine with a little landscaping (like around trees and near the house and pathways).

Our new house is mostly grass with a few landscaped areas. It'll take some learning to keep up with those parts but it's nice that a lot of the hard part of it is already done.

The former owners of my house were "gardeners", or at least, thought they were. I have all sorts of mulched bedding and such in my front and back yards. I hate it. It's so much upkeep (that we don't do). I'd rather just have grass!

Our new house mostly has grass which we love (but sprung for a rider mower since it takes so long to mow!) and a few mulch areas close to the house, in the side and around the base of a few trees.... I think it's a good balance - we are trying to decide if we need to re-mulch and how much it will take!

Our front and back yard are mostly grass. The front of the house is heavily landscaped, as is the perimeter of the whole yard, but it's mainly grass in the middle. I love the look of a lot of landscaping, but my husband doesn't want to mow around stuff, so he wins for now.

Ugh, too much of our house is landscaped! The entire perimeter of the house has mulch beds with flowers and plants. The border along the street has mulch beds. The front yard has two trees with mulch beds and more plants. The backyard has a patio surrounded by mulch beds. It's crazy.

The front of our house is completely landscaped. The side and back yards have not been kept up so we have a lot of work to do!! We moved in a month ago and we've barely made a dent.
The majority of our backyard is a steep hill with trees and boulders, though.. So we may need to get a professional in to evaluate what we can even do back there.

Our front/back yards are mostly grass with mulched beds bordering the house or walkways. In keeping with the surrounding houses we also have a bed at the back of the yard as well. Does there appear to be a purpose to all the mulching in your yard?

@bluestriped bee: does it look nice? It could have just been a hobby for one of the homeowners. The good news is if you pull out the mulch, you will probably have some amazing soil there to plant grass in!!
In ours, we have a lot of areas mulched. My husband has bad allergies so mowing is tough on him. He likes to garden, though so he goes out every spring and digs up more grass for another bed. 
We have beds down the property line where we planted privacy trees, around the trees in the back and in front of our shed. We also have mulched areas along the driveway up front and in front of the house.

Mostly grass. The area around the path to the front door is mulched; in the back I have a little corner flower garden that is mulched.

We sodded the front last year and did all the landscaping ourselves. We refused to believe the whole 10% of your home's value should be spent on your yard.
The backyard is currently a jungle. Like seriously... I lost my golden retriever among the weeds this morning.

Mostly grass. the front has 4 beds with flowers and mulch. But we have a big front yard so the grass is still the majority. The back is all grass and back edge has plants but we don't have mulch there cause it doesn't need it.

Our front yard is landscaped with shrubs and other plants/trees. The back was "landscaped" when we bought the house, but not to our liking. We have close to 10 huge oak trees on our property and the majority are in the backyard. The previous owners liked a lot of fruit trees (grapefruit, orange, tangerine, banana and avocado!) and a ton of other plants that made it impossible to see one side of the yard to the next. DH recently finished ripping out all of the backyard except for the oaks and orange tree.
That made for a fun conversation when we saw the previous owners recently at birthday part at our next door neighbor's house. They could clearly see there was a ton of stuff missing in the backyard. Awkward!

We have a mix. It is a corner lot, and the side facing the busier street has grass, and the side facing the side street is all xeriscaped. We live in a dry place where water is expensive, so the less watering the better. Right now the strip between the sidewalk and the street has grass and I'm ready to pull it out and xeriscape there, too.

Our yard is pretty small (.1 acre with a 2600 sq ft home on it, so not a ton of grass left). The front yard has a mulched/stone flower bed on either side of the driveway covering the whole front of the house. The back yard just has 3 trees with mulch around them.

@spaniellove: Oh, yeah. It definitely has a purpose. The past owners were retired and they might have spent money to have someone regularly landscape and maintain their lawn. It definitely cuts down on the amount of grass that needs to be cut. For us, since we maintain the lawns ourselves and prefer there to be more grass for our dogs, we'll want to convert back to more grass.

I'd say mostly landscaped.....it's taken us 6 years, though. We have grass and flower beds out front (still working on them--some stuff keeps dying) and hostas around the side, then the back is heavily landscaped. DH put in a retaining wall, steps, mulch, flowers, it's really nice. I had a red bud and a dwarf cherry tree planted. We have a small yard, but pretty stuff makes me happy

The people that lived here before us were not gardeners, so I've been slowly adding. I'm jealous of those of you who say you have too much! I've added flower beds to the front of the house and along the side and I've added a veggie/flower patch in the back. Everything else is grass. I think we'll eventually have something around the deck too. It looks funny to just have grass up to it.

Our backyard is smaller than our front yard. it's half brick patio, half grass with the last back lined with privacy trees before fencing.

Mostly grass in back with some landscaping on a hillside (trees, flowers, etc) and the front yard is grass and more landscaping. We did a lot to it over the past 4 years so we are just trying to maintain it all now.
