@wonderstruck: it's the savings energy efficient ratio. We are being told we need anything from 13-20.

I believe 13 is the minimum SEER for new models made today... I am not sure what my current one is but I'm guessing it's much lower than that since it's from 1999. We got a quote for a new one last week and the price difference between a 13 SEER and a 14.5 SEER was $400 I think. I think the guy told my husband that only improves the efficiency by about 5%? Not sure how much that would save on the electric bill. That's about as much as I know about it... Oh and I'm in Chicago.

My SO is in the heating/cooling business; he said if you are aiming for a decent balance between energy efficient and not spending a fortune on the unit, aim for a SEER level of 15 or 16. That being said, we have an older AC unit and he laughed when I asked him what ours was Apparently it is crap, but the thing still works so well that he doesn't want to install a new one yet.

@PermaStudent: most companies have pushed a level 16 on us. But one company today told us that we really don't need it because we won't run the AC enough in New York. He said 16 is more for the South where it's run all year and 13 should be fine for us... I'm so overwhelmed.

@swedishfish: If you have any questions, I can ask hubby for you I'm obviously useless but he is generally full of good advice, lol.

@swedishfish: We're in TX, where we run the A/C 9 months out of the year, and we were just quoted a 3 ton 16 SEER machine, and the guy said it would be perfectly adequate for us.
