What type of wood do you have? Do you like it? Our dog getting sick all over the already gross carpet in our new house is expediting our hardwood hunt ASAP. Thanks!

We don't have dark hardwood, but just an FYI - the darker your floors the more dust and dog hair are visible on them. I LOVE the look of it though.

My mom has dark hardwood....looks stunning but it shows every speck of dirt and even worse, dog hair. She's constantly vacuuming. We have an in between light/dark and it hides our dogs hair much more easily !

We have dark hardwood and it definitely shows dirt and dust more than lighter wood.

We have tigerwood and my grandparents have a light oak. You can definitely see more dirt and dust on our floor. We have to be vigilant about steaming/polishing to keep it looking good.

Our dark hardwood (bamboo) floors are gorgeous, but with four dogs, a cat, and a toddler I wish we would have gone lighter. They show every speck of dirt and every hair, which we have a lot of! Also, tiny scratches from LO dragging something across them show up so much worse than on lighter floors.

I have a medium dark stain on the wood floors in my office (you can see the comparison to the original color in the photo). It's just the original wood floor that we had refinished and stained.
I like it, and I don't think this color shows dust/hair too bad. But if you go darker the dust and dirt will be more noticeable.

I was coming here to say the same thing as everyone else-- ours are really beautiful, not sure what type of wood but they are almost a cherry color, but they show the dog fur like crazy. It drives me nuts because I feel like we swiffer or vacuum every other day and it looks like we don't. It also shows our foot prints, which I find odd. (We are usually barefoot in the house, if we wear socks it's less of an issue).
They do still look really nice, and I saw our upstairs neighbors who do not have pets or a baby and their's looked stunning, but if you are looking for really low maintenance I feel like a mid tone would be better.

I agree with PPs. The dark hardwood was one of the features that really attracted us to our house. After we moved in we quickly learned that they show every. little. speck. of. dirt. We Roomba every day and the floor is covered in dog hair within an hour. Our bigger dog wears boots in the house because the scratches from his nails show so easily. Like @Foodnerd81: said, our foot prints show all the time, too.
They really are gorgeous, but I'd choose a lighter stain with dogs and babies!

We did an engineered hardwood because it was cheaper. The dog has all kinds of scratches (more like indents) in the wood now and we used a hickory I believe which is fairly hard on the scale.
Honestly, my parents got some really nice vinyl in their house that looks 100 times better than ours and will hold up better. It's expensive though.

we got acacia engineered hardwood and we love it. It's dark and light and we get so many compliments on it!

I also was clicking this thread to tell you not to go too dark. Our floors are honey colored but the stairs are espresso colored and while they are beautiful when clean that almost never happens because they are dirty as soon as I am done cleaning them!
A friend has floors the same color that @charmed: shared for her office and has two dogs and it seems fine.

@rahlyrah: That makes me feel better. I thought maybe we had greasy feet or something.

We have medium dark wood, acacia stained with walnut. They look beautiful, but because they're stained you can see every little scratch...

We have a mahogany. When we moved in we wanted to change all of it to a much much darker wood but I'm glad we didn't because even though this isn't our taste it's a nice compromise between darkness and not showing every speck of dust and dog hair! It also helps to have some texture or grain in the wood. Our kitchen and entry floor has more texture and it's very forgiving in terms of not needing to be cleaned.

We have darker composite/hardwood and it has held up pretty well for the scratches. They have great laminates now that look like hardwood boards and we plan on doing those in our basement. http://www.hardwooderia.com/laminate-flooring/laminate-flooring-westlake-village/

We picked out Brazilian cherry in our last home, and it was beautiful. Unfortunately, it did show dust and pet hair as others have pointed out. We have lighter floors in this home.

We have the original red oak, we stained with a walnut stain to time down the red.
