What was your most immediate need? We had terrible storms here last night and our day care teacher's sister was terribly affected. Her apartment was flooded to the ceiling. She had renter's insurance but it doesn't cover flooding! They just lost their grandmother this week (it was their mom's mom and they lost their mom when they were young so it was very hard). I can't imagine everything she's going through. Two other moms from daycare and I are going to pull together a bunch of clothes for her (luckily she's similarly sized to us) and then get her a big gift card to Wal Mart. What else can we do that will help right away?

I haven't been directly affected because I thankfully live on a hill, but our city had major flooding last year this time. Water was super important because our water was not drinkable. Ready made food.
Eta: depending on how bad the flooding was, she will need help getting the flood water out and cleaning out anything that was damaged. A walmart gift card would be great, because she can get pretty much anything there.
Sounds like she's had a rough week. I hope things start to look up for her!

@locavore_mama: They won't be able to get back into the apartment until clean up is complete. There were 12 families affected and the Red Cross has set up shelter for them at a near by church so I *think* they are OK on food, but the WalMart near her has a grocery store too so the Wal Mart GC should cover that if not.

I'm so sad for them. My last NF had a house fire so I can definitely emphasize. If you can offer them a place to stay while they figure out their housing arrangement set up I think that would be really helpful. Other than that food and gift cards.
Edit- Also clothes, hosing goods, basically everything because I'm not sure how much can be saved.

@.twist.: Because she was a renter the apartment complex is responsible for the clean up. Which is good and bad, is saves her the work, but it also means they aren't letting her back in until clean up is done so anything that might have had a chance of being saved will probably be ruined by then.

Then I would say gift cards are best and a place to stay. But you said the church set something up, so that's probably taken care of.

My husbands family's house burnt down when he was in high school, a few weeks before Christmas. He said their most immediate needs were seasonal clothes (it was winter) and shoes, along with basics like toiletries and school supplies (he and his brother were, I think, 16 and 11).
