@Mrs. Jump Rope: THANK YOU. Our new place has engineered hardwood and we just got a shark-vac thing and wondered out loud after we did it if it was bad for the floors. So you think we need the laminate system if they are engineered? Would have loved solid, but that would have been a $$$$$ upgrade.

@Mrs. Yoyo: yup. i don't know why sharks are marketed toward cleaning hardwood floors. it can really damage them.
this is a fairly good article:

I vacuum with a Dyson dc35 every night and every other day I clean all the floors with Bona (I bought the one that came with a mop).

@Mrs. Jump Rope: another Bona fan! I ditched the steam mop after hearing about the warping issue.
ETA - forgot to add that I use the Swiffer vac before mopping with the Bona.

For my hardwood floors I use the Dirt Devil Accucharge 15.6 Volt Cordless Bagless Stick Vac (that's a mouthful, lol) daily to pick up the grass, dog hair, human hair, and dirt. A few times a week I go over the hardwood floors with the O Cedar Microfiber Spray ProMist mop, using a barely damp microfiber pad with solution of vinegar and water just to get the grime off.

Our apartment is all wood and about 1500sq ft. I wish we had a roomba or similar, but they are just way too expensive in Europe. For now, I vacuum about once a week, we don't wear shoes in the house and food is only in the kitchen. I think we are going to hire a cleaning person soon so that the floors can stay cleaner. We don't have a/c so our windows are constantly open and there is construction right across the street so seems dusty and it grosses me out.
