How long did it last for? I've had mine since 2008 and I'm afraid it's about to crap out on me!

i've had my macbook pro since 2010, the charger crapped out on me and the battery is going to need to be replaced soon, but it's still going strong!

@mrs. bird: I had the battery and charger replaced in 2012. I feel like it's just starting to slow down, especially if I have too many windows open in safari!!

This is so funny! My DH was just complaining about his MacBook today. He's mad that its only been 4 years and its like an expensive paperweight now.

I have an old one from 2005 that still works but I did have it cleaned off. It can't run too many programs at once any more but I probably should upgrade my memory.

@matador84: my safari has been freezing sometimes, but i think it's because i have so much stored on it. getting rid of emails in mail and some photos/videos has helped

Mine has been alive since 2006. I had a hard drive crash in 2011. But was able to save everything. Other than that it runs great but doesn't hold a charge as well as it once did and doesn't stay charged when it is powered off. I haven't used it much for the past few years though.

My MacBook is 7 years old and still going strong. It isn't the fastest computer on the block but it still works great. I am tempted to use my tax return money on a new computer, but I can't quite bit the bullet since my current computer still works just fine. The only big issue I ever had was when I accidentally kicked it off my bed and my hard drive crashed. Oops! Other than that my computer did crack in a few spots but it hasn't affected anything. I also had to change the battery once. I will definitely be buying another mac when I finally decide to bite the bullet. They are expensive but well worth the money

Hmm, mine is about five years old and has never had any problems whatsoever. I recently upgraded the hard drive to an SSD and upgraded the RAM from 4gb to 8gb at Christmastime but that was purely because I need the processing power for work, not because it was necessary. Upgrading was super quick and easy and so much more cost effective than buying a whole new laptop!

Mine usually last 3-4 years. However, I use high-power Adobe software that updates every 18mo or so, so eventually the Macbook Pro can't run the newest version fast enough.

I have had mine for only 1.5 years. I hope it lasts a long time!

I just got one yesterday. I hope it lasts forever!!! I plan on treating it very kindly.

I've had my Macbook Pro since 2009 and while it still works, it is soooo slow now. I have tried taking almost everything off of it and it hasn't gotten any quicker. I am hoping it continues to work as there is no way I want to buy another one. I do love it, though.

I've got a MacBook Air that I bought early 2011. the charger is pretty munted, but it still holds a charge fine and still works perfectly well!

I have had mine for 3 years. SO got his in 2006. Doesn't run great, but it's still functional aside from the fact that you can't unplug it... Need to get the battery fixed.

I've had 2. A MacBook from 2008 and MacBook Pro from 2012. My MacBook is still working fine but needs a new battery. I upgraded only bc I needed more memory/power for handling the volume of photo processing I was doing with new programs. My husband still uses it though and it works great. My 2012 is like new.

I have one I bought 8 years ago and we also just bought a new one in November.

I use my husband's old MacBook Pro that he bought in 2009. It still runs perfectly fine. My PC laptop died two years ago and the new MacBooks had come out. Since I'm not super into computers, he bought the new one and I took his old one. He did buy me an iPad to sweeten the deal though.
The 2009 MacBook Pro is the longest surviving laptop I've ever owned.

I've had that air since 2008. 2 hardrives, 1 new screen (a hinge broke), and 1 new battery later and it's still alive. I'm glad for AppleCare and great customer service because I didn't have to pay for most of the repairs. But, I will say I learned to not but a brand new product before they are able to work all the bugs out.

I have a macbook air that we bought about two years ago. It's still good, but one charger already broke, and I was blown away that it cost $90 to replace!

My husband's current MacBook pro is 8 years old now, he mostly uses it for web browsing, he uses an iMac for photo and video stuff. My iBook lasted 7 years, until the power supply insertion point got destroyed by too many drops (this was previous to the mag safe). My current macbook pro is 4 1/2 years old, and I am about to do a battery, RAM and hard drive upgrade in the next month or so to support more photo/video work. I expect that with some additional ram and a bigger/faster hard drive I will get another 3-4 years out of it.

I've had mine since 2009 and still in great condition. I haven't used it a ton though!

@matador84: I bought mine in 2007 and worked well until 2012. It still works but I bought a mac mini in 2012 and so my macbook is now used to stream to our tv. (I call it macbook retirement. My hard drive did crash on me in 2010 but it was covered under warranty. In 2011, it was really slow, but I upgraded the memory and it made it so fast and like new. The only thing that made me buy a new computer was that my 50gb hard drive was too small.
I sorta hate my mini, so I want to buy a iMac next.

@Sapphiresun: how old was the charger when it died? they replaced my first one after a year for free. that one recently broke and i bought an after market one.... it's burning itself, literally, it's so hot the sticker on it is browning from the heat! i don't leave it plugged in if i'm not in the room because i'm afraid it will start a fire. lesson: see if they'll replace for free, if not, spend the money on a real one, after market sucks!
nectarine / 2220 posts
@mrs. bird: It came with the computer, so about two years? DH just ran out to best buy and got a new one, so I don't know if he even asked if there was any warranty type thing with them. Did you go to the actual apple store, or wherever you bought it?
Good to know about the after market though, I was definitely looking on Amazon for other options once I found out how expensive they were!

I had one for 6 years before the mouse and wifi card both stopped working. I decided to buy a new one then. The old one still turns on though! I can use the old one with a USB mouse. Now I just use it as an external hard drive and FireWire it to my new one

I have one of those old white macbooks, I believe I've had them for 3+ years and while it's not running at it's best, it's still going! I think I can use it for another 2 years (even though i want a macbook pro!)

Got one in 2006, it was done for by 2008. Superdrive died first, $300 to replace... no thank you. Then 2 chargers totally burned through and smoking (could've burned the place down)!, and 2 batteries later, even after upgrading the RAM as much as possible and wiping it several times, we've both sworn off of Apple devices forever and ever. Got a lenovo thinkpad after that and that thing's a powerhouse workhorse. I love it.
The HP printer/scanner/copier we got for free with the macbook, however, is still going strong! haha.

I got mine at the beginning of 2011, and I've been worrying about the same thing. I've heard they usually last around 4 years, which seems crazy to me for a $1200 computer! I haven't had any major issues yet, though...it sometimes runs a bit slow, and I think it's running out of space, but that can be fixed.

I think there is a unspoken 5 year life cycle rule. Get a new one after 5 years.
If your computer is running slow, try clearing some space on your hard drive. Erase the 3 seasons of Greys anatomy you downloaded on iTunes, etc...

Mine is a 2010 Macbook Pro, and still going ok. It's a bit slow sometimes when I open up new applications, but I usually have a million things open, so that could be the problem.
