Ugh that sucks that they're not even offering to fix it or replace it. Apologizing really isn't enough! I don't think there's much I would've done except to be more cautious next time. Is it something you can fix yourself or the gown is a loss cause?

I would be so disappointed, that's for sure, but I don't know that I would have asked. My general feeling is that someone who borrows something might not have the funds to be able to replace it (otherwise, why would they have borrowed in the first place) and probably felt awkward saying so.

I would offer to replace it or pay for it if I broke it. If I loaned someone something and the ruined it I would not lend them something again. I don't think I'd ask that it be replaced but I'm guessing it would depend on the situation.

@Mrs. Pen: Could the chiffon skirt material be replaced? It might not be super easy, because the seamstress might have to take some of the dress apart to replace it, but maybe it's possible? I'm picturing a chiffon skirt over some sort of lining material flowing from the waistband of the gown. While replacing the chiffon in that situation might be tricky, it might not be impossible. Alternatively, would it be possible to put some sort of decorative hem over the tear/around the bottom of the skirt of the gown? I'm sorry about your dress!

What if you had the whole thing hemmed, to a knee length cocktail dress?

@mrs. bird: Agreed. I'd feel terrible if I was the one returning the damaged item, but if she's borrowing it may be because she can't afford it in the first place. If I could afford it, I'd definitely offer to fix/replace though. And I feel like I wouldn't lend any baby items I was attached to, due to likelihood of damage/stains, etc.

@Mrs. Pen: I love the color and pleating! That tear looks like it might be kind of high for a decorative hem and the pleats might preclude that anyhow, but I bet a skilled seamstress could help you out. If there's a dry-cleaner around you that specializes in formal/high-end clothing, they might be a place to check for referrals, or they might have someone on site. Otherwise, maybe a formal dress shop could give you a good lead.

ETA: If this dress is full-length, I would just take it up to tea-length or shorter and buy a pair of shiny gold heels to show off!

@Mrs. Pen: Gorgeous! (The neckline and silhouette is exactly like my wedding dress, so I guess I'm sort of biased.) I think the idea @rachiecakes mentioned is a good one.

If it gets tough or too expensive, though, take solace in the fact that accordion pleats look awesome in shorter lengths, too.
