We are traveling to Tahoe for five days in December and I am trying to decide if I need to buy winter boots. I live in Texas so I don't have a need for them here so I don't want to spend a ton if I do need them. We don't plan on skiing but we do plan on going sledding and snow mobiling. If I don't buy boots, what kind of shoes do I wear? Tennis shoes? These are the ones I like but they seem impractical for wearing them any time during the winter at home but that might be the case for any of the boots I buy and I don't know if they are necessary for a short vacation.

Do you have rainboots? You could wear them with thick socks.
The trick is to get a shoe that's waterproof, when your feet get wet it's cooolllldd. -
I wear running shoes if I'm just walking to the car or something, but your feet will get soaked and uncomfortable. If you're sledding, etc, boots are so good for walking up the hills and will keep your feet dry. Wet feet+cold air= misery!
You don't need to go expessive...just lined and waterproof!

Yeah if you are planning to play inthe snow you will Ned some kind of boots. Rain boots or hiking boots would work if you had them already. If not I'd just buy a cheap pair from target or Payless or something. I personally pay a lot for winter boots but there is snow or ice on the ground for 4 months out of the year here!

If you are going to wear normal shoes, make sure they have good treads on the bottom!!!

You definitely need waterproof shoes of some kind. Rainboots with thick socks, or several pairs of socks are a good idea.
I have Sorel boots, but we get a lot of snow.

Def waterproof shoes. I have a pair of Muck Boots. They're a little on the $$ side but I use them year round for fishing, going to the woods, or anything like that.

Yes, if you are playing in the snow you'll want something high, lined, and waterproof. The snow might be not so high in December in town, but there will be feet in the mountains.
The boots you picked out would work great; if you're looking for something cheaper, I just buy boots at Costvo. I've never spent over $30/pair, and they usually last 2 winters.

Waterproof is key. So even a cheap pair of target raincoats with thick hiking socks can do the trick. The other thing is to get a cheaper pair of snow boots and buy a waterproof spray. For a week that should do the trick. I really wouldn't waste money on Sorels for a one week trip.

do you hike? you could get waterproof hiking boots, wear with thick socks, and just try them out each day. then you could re-use them. rainboots is another good suggestion, or just get cheap boots.

Hmm, you'll need snow boots for sure! Rain boots with thick socks will keep you dry but you'll probably get cold tootsies after awhile and that's no fun.

I dont know how cold it gets there but where I live I use -30 rated boots and my toes still get cold. But if you are only going to be using them this once you could probably get away with a waterproof boot and warm socks.

If you are afraid of your toes getting cold they also sell fleece boot liners.

I would do thick fleece liners with rain boots, considering you'll be going back to a land of no snow. I love my Sorel Tivolis, but we get snow, snow,snow here.

Maybe get a pair that's snow friendly, but can double as normal autumn boots? I have a pair of Keens that keep my feet really toasty, even in snow.

If you're going to do the rain boot option make sure to wear really really warm stuff with them. Fleece liners plus super heavy socks. maybe even multiple pairs. Personally, I find rain boots to have absolutely no warmth to them, and if you're going to be in semi deep snow, your feet are going to freeze. If it was me, I'd get some cheap Target winter boots.
