Can I see a picture? I think I'm good with the recipes for the cupcakes and cake and I'm better at icing the cupcakes but I need some inspiration for the cake. I did an okay job and could probably do better with the idea I had but I'd like to see other ideas too!

@BoogieBea: I was thinking it looked super professional too and was going to ask how to create that effect but I just don't think I could do that! And I'm wanting to use three different colors which would make it even harder for me.

But I had no experience with fondant at the time so I scrapped it. The ribbon style I ended up with is actually super easy to create. Just need a decorating tip for making ribbons and it pretty much does the job for you. There are how to videos online. The hardest part is actually making the buttercream frosting (maybe because I didn't have success with it in the past) but my friend walked me through the steps and this one came out great. You can certainly do ombré with this as well but will just require more time making the different colors. My cake was darker on top by mistake because I ran out of frosting and had to mix a new batch. -

I'm making my DD's smash cake for her party next month. Did anyone else do a trial run cake? Just to make sure it tastes/looks okay?
