Do you wear a helmet? I've decided to give biking a try, we have some trails by our house that are perfect, and my neighbor and I are going to go together. So...do you I wear a helmet? I haven't biked since I was a kid

If I'm just going for a stroll around the neighborhood I don't.
edit- I never ride my bike..if I do it's just on my cul-de-sac but I actually don't even own a helmet! One LO is big enough to ride in a bike trailer we will all wear helmets.

Of course!
Plus if I didn't wear one DS would insist on him not wearing one and he HAS to wear one

Yes of course. I think it's silly not to.
When I was a teenager, one of my friends crashed their bike and their helmet had a HUGE gouge taken out of it. Imagine that was his head? It's not like he was going super fast or anything either.
They have some nice looking helmets. I have a retro looking one that's super cute!

@pui: Will you send me a link or share a picture? I'm pretty clumsy so I'm thinking a helmet on a trail is necessary!
@MrsTiz: I'm thinking a casual ride around the neighborhood I will skip.

Oh my goodness PLEASE wear a helmet, everyone - it's way more dangerous not to than being in a car without a seat belt. My dad was hit by a car while out on a 'stroll around the neighborhood' on his bike and managed to get out alive with 5 broken ribs, a broken shoulder, a collapsed lung and a broken collarbone. He'd have died on impact without his helmet.

Every time, even for a casual ride around the neighborhood. You never know what's in the road that you can hit or what the drivers around you are doing.

Would anyone here not wear a seatbelt or not strap their kid in to a car seat for a ride around the neighbourhood? Why take the risk, no matter how small?

@LuLu Mom: I got mine off Ebay somewhere... I can't find a picture but it's bubblegum pink (matches the accents on my bike) and has an old-school look like this one:

The only time I've ever ridden a bike was on the boardwalk by the beach, and I did not wear a helmet.
If I was going to ride on a flat walking park trail, I probably wouldn't. But, anywhere near cars or with slopes I definitely would.
pomelo / 5678 posts
Of course! I live in a huge bike city and have never seen anyone without one (we never did as kids growing up but the culture has changed with the times. There was a horrific accident on campus where two riders collided and one died )
pomelo / 5678 posts
@JoJoGirl: that's what happened to a girl on campus! She always wore a helmet but they figured she must have been running late or something because it was the only.ever.one.time. she didn't have one on
grapefruit / 4442 posts
Yes always, you never know whats going to happen. You should especially wear on a trail because there could be roots, uneven surfaces and rocks that can cause you to lose control or crash

I usually do, but there have been times I didn't. I was in a bike accident a few years back when a car swerved directly at me. I flipped forward, over the handlebars of my bike and landed on my back with my bike on top of body. My body was wrecked but my head was okay...I was wearing a helmet.

Its law here, so absolutely. Also, a friend was recently in a very bad bike accident and would likely have not made it if he wasn't wearing one. As it is, he has to deal with a brain injury for the rest of his life.

I always wear a helmet, it actually really bothers me when I see people without one. It is such a small thing you can do to protect yourself. You just never know what could happen. DH was in a bad accident and his helmet probably saved him.
That being said, I would like to get a cuter one for my cruiser bike when I am just tooling around town.

OMG PLEASE WEAR A HELMET!!!!!!!!!
My cousin was in a terrible bike accident last month and had severe brain injury trauma. She wasn't hit by a car or anything--just fell off her bike while riding in a park. SO PLEASE wear a helmet!!!!
squash / 13764 posts
@MrsTiz: @LuLu Mom: @swurlygurl: please reconsider not wearing a helmet at all times!! Like I said, my cousin was riding on a quiet path and just hit a bump wrong and had a serious brain injury. It is NEVER worth the risk.

Always! It just takes one accident to have things go really wrong really fast, even if you are going slowly or just around the block.
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
Always. Always always always. Plus it's illegal in my state not to

@JoJoGirl: @hilsy85: Okay I'm wearing a helmet, your stories have me freaked out! I can't imagine risking myself over something as small as wearing a helmet!
squash / 13764 posts
@LuLu Mom: yes! Seriously, it's one little thing that can change your life.
I saw a dad riding with a toddler on a bike the other day and NEITHER were wearing a helmet. I was SO upset--I wanted to say something but he rode away before I could
cantaloupe / 6206 posts
@LuLu Mom: Yeah He actually was thrown off his bike the same way Christopher Reeve was thrown off his horse. The point of impact was 2 inches away from his spine (hence one side getting all the damage - left ribs, left lung etc). How he landed was extremely lucky since he wasn't quadriplegic, but no helmet would've had a much different outcome.

Wear one! I got hit by a car bad while crossing the street ( in a crosswalk!) I know I should have been walking the bike but I still got hit it sucked!
honeydew / 7091 posts
@hilsy85: Okay okay, you guys convinced me
Although, the only time I can imagine riding a bike is with my kids, and they will definitely have to wear helmets, so I'll have to by association.

Yes, absolutely! I wear a helmet when biking, skiing and snowboarding.
I want to set a good example for my LO and as her mom, I want to make sure I'm being safe so that I can CONTINUE to be her mom.

I voted other.
If I'm beach cruising, or riding around a park, or on a flat trail, then I don't wear a helmet. But if I was mountain biking, or biking on a street with cars (aside from at the beach), then I might wear a helmet.
Once I rented a bike to ride across the golden gate bridge. I was in leather soled sandals and had no helmet. It might have been one of the more dangerous things I did.

Yes! I rode my bike around the neighborhood once and was spooked by a car coming my way. I swerved and fell on the sidewalk pavement. My glasses broke my fall luckily, and I had a few minor scrapes. If I wore contacts that day, I would have had a more serious injury. Ever since, I have been super paranoid and always wear a helmet. It's not even a choice.
I supposedly live in a very bike friendly community, and I cringe every time I see someone without a helmet on their bike. I don't think I've seen a single college student wear a helmet around campus either. Eh.

Always do! My husband used to hate that I made him do it but he gets it. We also need to be good influences for our kid. The only way we got her to wear a helmet was to put ours on first.
grapefruit / 4823 posts
I do ever since my husband was in a pretty bad accident while riding his bike in his neighborhood a few years ago. his helmet was cracked, so I don't even want to imagine what would have happened to his head if he hadn't had it on.
pomelo / 5257 posts
Please everyone wear a helmet! When my sister and I were kids, she fell off her bike at a high speed and hit a curb. Her helmet had a huge crack in it. If she hadn't been wearing it, that would have been her head!
nectarine / 2358 posts
@LuLu Mom: yes. There was a nurse at the hospital I work at that fell during trail biking and hit his head. Passed away a couple of days later after being removed from life support. It was very hard for his wife as she was also a nurse so she felt like she should have been able to save him while they waited for EMS (no way she could have). Sorry to make this morbid I just think it's important!

I am a helmet stickler... And berate my husband for not wearing one as he bikes to work everyday... BUT I don't. And the stupid reason? I just haven't gone out and bought one. But I know I need to. J always always wears a helmet. It's second nature to him now. I know I need to model that for him too.
wonderful cherry / 21504 posts
I always do. I had a bad bike accident when I was young, have amnesia from that night but luckily no other effects. I was not wearing a helmet. Dh usually does but if he is just on a bike path I still need to convince him sometimes. I was so proud of him when e decided on his own that he should wear one for skiing. (He likes going off trails and stuff).
Am I just getting old, or is it getting less uncool to be concerned about safety- helmets, sunscreen and sun hats...? Even smoking seems to be uncool? Or really maybe I'm just old and my peers are the other old fogeys.
squash / 13764 posts
@Foodnerd81: i think it is the stupidest thing to do dangerous stuff like that (not wear helmets, not wear sunscreen, start smoking, etc.). I really don't understand people who don't take safety precautions when they're doing risky things like bike, ski/snowboard, etc.
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21616 posts
@Foodnerd81: TBh I get the impression that most people who aren't smokers view it as "gross" now. I actually get a number of patients who want to switch doctors because they are tired of being berated about smoking by their doctors. Well, that's their job.
pomelo / 5073 posts
Yes. One of my friend's dad had a bike wreck and would have died if he hadn't been wearing a helmet. We will be strict s out helmet wearing.
hostess / wonderful persimmon / 25556 posts
Ever heard of a ghost bike? It's how riders who are killed by motorists while biking are remembered. They are very powerful and moving. Please always wear a helmet.
