What does that mean? Do you have separate accounts or do you just mean that your spouse will pay, but in the end it will come out of a joint account?

It means I'm lazy and don't feel like taking out my wallet but the money's coming out of our joint account anyway.

@swedishfish: ditto!!
except other people will joke about how I'm making him pay thinking it's "his money" so I have stab right back and let them know it all comes out of the same account.
cantaloupe / 6751 posts
We have a joint account so it would mean he's just using his own debit card b/c I'm too lazy to dig through my bag to grab my wallet

We have joint separate accounts. I know, that makes no sense. I confused a friend over the weekend about that.
But if I said he'd pay for it, I'd mean he'd pay with the debit card with his name on it.

I would assume separate accounts unless it's...toilet paper? DH and I keep some separate money
pomelo / 5720 posts
@swedishfish: same. DH just always ends up being the one to pull out his wallet when we go somewhere.
honeydew / 7091 posts
@swedishfish: Haha, same. I don't even bother bringing my wallet anymore. DH always has his in his pocket, so I don't need to lug my ginormous purse around.

I don't say that, we have a joint account. which is why getting birthday presents/ect. are just not as exciting as they used to be

It means I don't have my wallet with me, so my husband will either pay with cash or credit, from our joint accounts!
coconut / 8472 posts
I say it sometimes as a joke, because we have everything joint. It basically means he needs to be the one to pull his card out of his wallet and handle the mechanics of paying.

We have a joint account, and each have individual accounts too. We also have individual random gift cards or store cards. Or it could mean the lazy wallet thing...depends!
eggplant / 11824 posts
We have both joint and individual accounts; so usually it just means that he's going to be the one to put it on his cc (we charge everything for the points), but may also mean he is actually paying for it with non-joint money.
Usually it's symbolic; like, DH will pay when he's taking me out, although at the end of the month it all comes out of the same fund!

@Mrs. Jump Rope: I actually think this is the smartest way to do things if you want to keep your money separate. In the event of one of you passing away it will be a whole lot easier for the surviving spouse to access funds if the account is joint then trying to deal with probate on an individual account!

@swedishfish: what you said!
We have all joint accounts, except for 401ks.
We've shared money since before we were even married.

I don't say that, unless I"m kidding. Because we have joint accounts. So sometimes I'll tell my husband he's treating to be funny (usually I pay when we are together because he stresses about tip amounts lol).

@MoonMoon: Same here. Could mean I'm too lazy to dig out my card or I left my wallet at home and DH will come pay for it out of our account, or it could mean that it's coming out of his personal spending money.

We don't have a joint account, but it's all meshed together anyway. So basically what @swedishfish: and @looch: said

We have our separate accounts and one joint account to pay for the shared expenses. It works well for us because we don't have to argue about frivolous expenditures. I look at our separate accounts as allowance money.
persimmon / 1177 posts
We have joint accounts, so it all comes from the same place. DH likes to tell me he's "buying" me dinner though
persimmon / 1367 posts
We have separate accounts, so that generally means we're gifting something to each other.
wonderful kiwi / 23653 posts
We have joint everything so it no longer matters who is paying! When we're out though, DH usually pays since I'm too lazy to fish for my wallet, and I never have cash on me!
pomegranate / 3113 posts
We keep a joint savings account and joint checking for household/daycare type expenses, but separate accounts otherwise. So if he's paying, it's coming out of his personal account.

I forgot my wallet, or my hands are full dealing with LO. We have a joint account.
persimmon / 1404 posts
We have separate chequing and joint savings. We both make really good incomes and the separate accounts gives us both more freedom over what we want to spend our money on... I won't freak out over him spending so much on golf and he doesn't see how much I spend at Sephora.
