Did you feel obligated to use a family name for your second? I feel like the second might feel less important when they get older if they weren't named after a family member when our oldest was. Also, would you feel obligated to use a name from the other side of the family the next time? Thoughts?

Chloe's middle name is after a relative. We wanted to carry on the tradition, so this baby's middle name will follow suit.

We did not use a family name but these are some of the same questions I have about using family names. I'm interested to hear what others think. My parents did not use a family name for me (or any of my siblings) so maybe that's why I also didn't choose a family name for our LO.

My parents did not use family names for me or my siblings. DH was raised Jewish so he requested that we not use the first names of living relatives.
With that said, R's middle name is my grandmother's middle name. It's also a nickname for DH's grandmother's name.
If we had or have a boy, his middle name would've been or will be my uncle's first name. My uncle passed away 15 years ago.
If our next LO is a girl, I'm playing with the idea of combining our mothers' middle names for her middle name.
I feel like we chose a middle name with meaning for R so we should do the same for LO 2.

We don't feel obligated but we are going to. I like family names for middle names. E's middle name was my grandmother's name. If we have a boy, he will have DH's grandfathers name as his middle

I love the idea of using family names, but I just don't love OUR family names. We will probably suck it up and do a family middle name for our next, though..
LO has a family name. I do feel somewhat obligated to pick from the other side next time. Honestly, I feel like some family members had hurt feelings over her name.... Oh, well, too bad!

We used a family name for DS's middle name, but not for DD. I just went with a name I really loved.

Nope! In fact I felt less obligated since we had already used a name in the family.

Our son's middle name is his deceased grandfather's first name. His other three grandparents are still alive, so this was a pretty obvious choice.
I have no idea how we might name a second child. There is no other obvious choice. I guess we could pick a great grandparent but I don't think either of us feels as strongly about that as we did about my FIL.

LO's middle name is my dad's middle name and if we have another boy, his middle name will be FIL's name. I don't feel as compelled to name a girl with a family name (maybe because many of the female family names don't work/aren't our favorite).

DS1 was named after his great grandfather. For DS2 we considered using my great uncle's name but were mostly set on a totally unrelated name with my maiden name as his middle name. I just was never 100% decided because it just didn't feel special or like it has a lot of meaning to it. When he was born we just decided to name him after his other great grandfather and a middle name similar to DH. Neither name was a contender at any point but felt right when he was actually in our arms.

we used a variation of my middle name for DD's middle and have ideas on how to carry that through for any other kids.

My DS's first and middle are my husband's two middle names (which were his two grandfathers), but I picked them out years before I met my DH, so it was just a crazy coincidence. We did not feel any obligation to use family names for DD.

Good question! LO #1 has a family middle name from my side and LO #2 will possibly have a family middle name, also from my side if a girl and if a boy will have a family middle name from Dh's side. Honestly, I think for us it just depends on the names that we like and how they fit with the first name.

Lo's name is after people from both sides, but the names we like for a second aren't family names. I'd love to name all our kids with family names but we don't have many names that we actually like in our family trees

LO's name (first and middle) is from DH's side. We don't feel especially obligated to use a family name again, I think because we're having another girl. However, if we do use one I'm adamant that it be from my side. We're undecided at this point.

DS is named after my dad who passed away in 2006. It actually makes me NOT want to use "in memorium" names again. I don't want to have a whole family named after dead loved ones.... Seems grim. Too bad our favorite for this next boy is DH's grandfather's name. Guess we're grim?

@Mrs. Lion: maybe you have some distant relatives with great names you never knew about! My husbands family thinks we named this baby (Charlotte) after his great-great-great-great- grandmother that we've never heard of before LOL
