If you won a giant lottery jackpot of $500 million, what would you do?
I asked DH and he said he would buy an NBA team. I honestly don't know what I would do other than quit my job and buy ourselves nice things so his plan sounds good to me!

Ha ha.
Buy a big house on the Cape + a house in Northern California + a big sailboat. Quit my job, have as many kids as I wanted, and spend my time switching between my 3 "houses".

I'd tithe 10% of it to our church and other charities. Then I'd pay off all of our dept and buy us a house, buy my mom and house, and the IL's one if they wanted one. From there, we would take some great trips and invest quite a bit, plus just have fun with it.

Buy a house here (not here here where I am now, but maybe one somewhere in Upstate NY and a beach house in CA somewhere ) , and probably one overseas somewhere--a ski chalet maybe? Buy houses for our close friends/family. I'd travel a lot, and invest in small, interesting businesses and/or causes. I'd definitely have a second kid

I would tithe 10%, pay off all debt, buy us a bigger house, new cars, and put up a big fat chunk for our LO's college educations and $ to gift them after graduation to start their new lives!
ETA- Most importantly, I'd quit my stupid job too!

I would buy a place on the water with a huge lovely art studio and have 10 babies! And travel the world with them. I would love for dh to be my studio assistant.

Have DH quit his job but still live a somewhat normal life doing realistic fun things but so we could spend lots of time together as a family.

I'd give a ton of it away, probably to all the public schools and libraries in my area. I'd save like 50m, pay off all debt, set up college funds for LO and all my nieces and nephews, then quit my job and start traveling the world with DH!

Pay off debts, fund retirement, fund college for LO, stick a bunch in savings, buy a few shiny things, donate a bunch, invest the rest.

Quit! Buy a house, pay off our debt, college fund for LO, pay off my Mom's mortgage, buy apartments for my brothers and sister, pay off my BFF's mortgage & donate to the college fund for her boys, travel, start my own publishing company.

Buy our dream house and new furniture for it, new cars, pay of family member's houses/give them money, set up trust fund for R and future baby, and then invest.
Oh and some new clothes and handbags for me

We talk about this every time the lottery gets up there. The first thing we would do is charter a plane and take all our family and close friends to Hawaii for a nice vacation.
We would quit our josb, pay off all our debt & our immediate families (parents if they have any, sisters and his brother.)
Next build our dream home, and fill my closet up to the max, buy back the other 1/2 of his family's land, & give most of it to our favorite charities and church. I would pay for all our nieces/nephews & our God child's college education.

We'd probably keep half of the after-tax amount for ourselves and split the other half between our immediate family members (our parents and siblings).
I'd like to buy a few investment properties in college towns, and own a bed-and-breakfast type place in south asia.

I would buy the most fantastic house on the Florida gulf coast that I could find. We'd quit our jobs and spend our days living the life of luxury - shopping, swimming, boating, etc. We'd also travel the world. It would be a fantastic few years before the kids would need to be in school. After that I'd probably do some volunteer work with shelter dogs.
ETA: We'd also help out a lot of our family and set up trust funds for the kids. We've had a lot of "what if we won the lottery" discussions, lol.

Donate a bunch
Then pay off everyone's house and debt that I'm close with (friends and extended family)
Set up college/future funds for all my kids and nieces and nephews.
Set up amazing retirement funds
Have enough to play with every year and take amazing vacations!
I think DH and I would still work. I can't imagine either of us quitting our jobs.
OR, scratch that, I would quit my current job and open my dream coffee shop/library. Yessss!
ETA: Is anyone else getting sad that none of this amazingness will ever happen? :'(

I would pay off all the debts of my entire family, and buy a plantation or something where we could all live. somewhere warmer Set up funds for my child, nieces/nephews, and likely adopt a couple children as well.
I don't know that I'd want to retire though - I would still want to *do* something, but I'm not sure what. Maybe volunteer across the globe? It's what I did every summer in high school and those trips were amazing.

Set aside a substantial amount for DS and any future kiddos to come, pay off debt, buy/build our dream house, hire Jeff Lewis to decorate the house, hire a maid and chef, invest a bunch of it, and go on a dream vaca.

So many things. First we would find somewhere with land that we liked and build a nice big house with a guest house on a gated yard where we can't see anything from any direction when in our home other than trees or yard. We would take vacations, get a chef, a housekeeper and an on-call nanny.
I would do volunteer work through charities I like and we would donate to good causes. We would, for the most part, donate to charities that we volunteer with so we can see where the money is going. And have another kid or two.
Or, we would take our best friends, move out to California and build a compound where we could all live happily and never work again.

I'd probably have a heart attack and keel over.
If I survived, it would be a gorgeous new house on a lake and new cars, I'd move my parents up near us (in their own new house, obviously), and take my entire family on a huge extravagant trip. I would donate a lot to animal and children's charities. I'd probably stay a student forever, and get degree after degree after degree.
I don't even know. That is a TON of money.

We'd share the wealth, save and spend some of it.

@PermaStudent: LOL!
Yup it's so much money that I can't even fathom what life would be like with it. Buying an extravagant home will cost ~$20 million in Beverly Hills or NYC. You'd still have a ton leftover after that! Larry Ellison purchased the entire island of Lanai for $500m so you can do a lot with that sum!

@oliviaoblivia: haha!
i daydream about this often! I would give a bunch to family including aunts, uncles, and cousins.
take a year off and travel around the entire world.
buy a house with a backyard and a garage in new york. but even with that much money i wouldn't want a mcmansion.
probably set up a foundation(s) and do a lot of charity work with children, women, and animals!
