Hhmmmhh... My immediate reaction was yes. But now that I read the details and see that the landlord has been actively trying to fix it all along I probably would not ask for a concession. It sucks for sure but it sounds like he is doing all he can to make it right.

Yes, I would. I'm also a landlord. The washing machine in my rental house broke, and I had a repairman come within 24 hours (who told me it was the motor and it would be almost as expensive to replace as buying a new one), and so I bought and scheduled an installation for a new one from afar....and had it all done within 1 week.

I feel like major appliances are part of a rental agreement, and should be fixed or replaced in a timely manner....and 2 months isn't timely!

@mrbee: I think it's fair to ask then. It's been highs of 20 here for the last month here, and a couple of my friends were talking about having their AC on, which seems a little ridiculous. You obviously pay a premium (at least an AC unit is a very rare thing here - maybe not in your area?) to live in a unit with that luxury, which has not been provided for the last couple months.

I've done this before. We lived in a building that had a gym listed as an amenity, and it was being renovated for a couple months. I asked for a concession of the price of the cost of obtaining alternate gym facilities for that period and was able to get it. AC might be a little harder to pin down a fair amount.

i would try to figue out how long of that time it's been negatively impacting your quality of life and ask for that percentage off. there's really no harm in asking- your apartment comes with a/c and it's not working when you need it most.

I think it's fair to ask. I'm curious as to how many visits you've had from a/c guys and why it took so long to figure out. Regardless, time spent with/waiting for repairmen=less productive time for you, plus your quality of life.

I would start by asking 5-10% off your rent those 2 months. Alternatively, did you buy any fans during this time, or anything else cooling-related you could ask the landlord to reimburse you for? Good luck!

I'd probably ask for a temporary portable unit to be brought in at his expense if they still predict that it will be a while before the issue is corrected, and a retroactive 5-10% reimbursement depending on the cost of your rent.

IDK about concessions, but I think it's fair to ask for an amount equal to getting temporary AC until it's fixed (window units, movable unit, etc.) We have a tenant too and it's always expected to fix things ASAP. I think in your heat, a couple of days would be reasonable. 2 months is not reasonable.
