The plumber came on Tuesday, then the landlord on Wednesday and the MIL is coming on Friday. Our house has never been cleaner! I don't like cleaning but it feel so good to come home to a clean and tidy house.
I needed about 2 hours before each person arrived. Well, the MIL was a planned trip so we were tidying up for the past week or so.

Our house is pretty clean right now. I just cleaned the bathrooms yesterday and vacuuming doesn't take too long. We try to go to bed with it picked up every night. I'd say probably 30 minutes to feel good about company coming over!

I've got two newborns so I'm not tidying for guests! Actually it's pretty clean right now. I run the dishwasher constantly because of dirty bottles and I've been doing a pretty decent job of staying on type of the clutter that builds up on the counters. There are burp cloths EVERYWHERE though!

5 min? Our house is generally pretty presentable. DH hates clutter and I hate dirtiness - it makes for a good combo.

30 minutes at the most...my emergency visitor routine is straighten up the family room, clear everything from the kitchen, and do a quick clean of all powder room surfaces.

@Greentea: @Espion: Thanks for saying something longer than 30 min. I was beginning to think I'm a slob because I need a week to clean the house. Haha. In our defense, we moved 4 months ago and haven't had any house guests (besides landlord), so we have been pretty lax with our cleaning. I'm trying to get some sort of cleaning routine so we keep up with everything.

An hour for me to be comfortable but I could get it done in 15 minutes if push came to shove! A 2 year old and. 9 month old sure know how to mess up a house!

@MamaMoose: def depends on the friend! We had friends over yesterday who we see all the time and whose home is messier so I only took a few mins to straighten up. Might hVe a friend over this weekend who is a total clean freak-- that's going to take longer!

Oh crikey, I'd need an hour at least - I always do! Not because I don't keep my house clean but because I have very high standards for visitors! If a friend was stopping by right now, though, it would be longer - DH used the bathroom this morning (if you know what I mean?) so I will inevitably need to scrub the toilet (I haven't been up there yet), and DD's breakfast stuff is still on the counter! I'm working from home and having a slack day!

I'm laying here exhausted after frantically cleaning before BIL arrives. It was a spurt of the moment idea to invite him over and after finishing my classes and scarfing down breakfast while putting all our junk away, I'm beat! I didn't even do a good job!

Depends. If it was just an "entertain in the living room" quest then maybe an hour to clean main level and bathrooms. If something was coming for an extended period and was staying here a few days! We would have to unbury the spare bed!!!

I cleaned yesterday, so maybe 15 minutes to clean up the breakfast dishes, wipe counters and maybe do another quick vacuum in the LR and kitchen.

Eh, depends who they are. Generally speaking, if my house is a mess and you're a good friend, you won't give a shit and neither will I. I try to keep the house in a state of decent cleanliness, but sometimes, it just isn't! It's pretty clean today, so maybe 30 min to put toys in a basket and clear off the counter tops?

Maybe 15-30 minutes? since having a cleaning lady, we've been better about keeping on top of clutter. Still got it, but clean up isn't as bad now.

Maybe 5 minutes. We have a regular cleaning service (or, as I call it, a "regular marriage and sanity saver") and both DH and I are really neat people in general, so just enough time to make sure things were organized and DD's toys were put away.

Probably like 15 minutes? Just need to tidy up, run the roomba, wipe down some surfaces. I usually clean on Sat so Fri is usually the dirtiest day for our house!

@littlebug: Ugh, I'm sorry. We are about to go through that this summer and I am dreading it. When we bought our house, the sellers accepted our lowball offer just because the female owner was so sick of keeping up a "show ready" appearance with a toddler. I feel your pain!
