I would absolutely be supportive and loving to my child no matter what. But I will admit that behind closed doors I would probably need a small adjustment period since something like that tends to change the future you see for your child, and I would be worried about the judgement they would face throughout their life. But I would never try to change them or love them any less because of something that is simply part of who they are.

It wouldn’t bother me at all; I will accept my LO for who they are. I want LO to be happy and when she is an adult I want her to find a partner who loves and supports her, and treats her right. I don’t care one bit if that partner is male or female.

I would feel sad that LO will have to face prejudice and terribly mean treatment from close-minded people; although, I hope and think that will lessen over time.

I always tell lo I hope she marries a nice boy or girl....as long as they're Jewish kidding of course, I want them to be Jewish but won't freak out if they're not.

Sexual orientation doesn't change anything for me. Just as long as my child(ren) are happy, healthy and doing what they can to pursue their happiness in life and goals - that's all that matters to me.

But I think 14 is a little too early to officially claim a sexual preference. I used to teach at an all-girl's middle school in Asia and had gotten really close to a highly academic group of my students. Some confided in me saying that they thought they might be lesbian -- but also admitted that they were confused and their lack of male interaction is adding to the confusion.

In this little group of 10 girls, 2 or 3 admitted to having girlfriends. Two of them were "serious" but not in a way adults would think is serious -- their gf's were always in another town and they'd only interact online or on the phone. They'd send pictures and gifts to each other but never met. So basically, they shared an emotional bond, not a physical one.

I told them to wait and see. I'd tell my own children the same thing. But I wouldn't treat them any differently if they were straight. Meaning no sleep overs and school first before anything else!

I think it would catch me off guard for a while, but I would be supportive and loving no matter what. My baby will always be my baby. Can't change that.

It kills me to hear about kids being made to feel unloved or unsupported by their families because of their sexual orientation. Regardless of LO's orientation, if he has GLBTQ friends who can't find support and unconditional love in their own homes, they're welcome to find it in mine.

Love is love! If she's happy, I'm happy.

I would be very supportive and tell my husband this all the time, I think he would have a more difficult time accepting this, especially if it was our son. I know he would step up, but we live in a very closed minded area and our child would most likely face judgement which would be heartbreaking for me as a mother.

I would be completely supportive because love is love and I know he/she would need a supportive environment. Our state is going through ridiculous measures to keep gay marriage illegal and in the past few weeks I've seen how people react to people of different sexual orientation- it is sad.

@lilteacherbee: That's tough - I can't imagine living in a place where people are so adamant about banning same sex marriage. I'm proud that my state was the first to legalize it. I think a lot of these hold out states will soon realize they're on the wrong side of history. Ok, off my soap box

@lilteacherbee: You must also be in NC - I have had to take a vacation from FB, otherwise I would be deleting a lot of "friends".

If my child was gay, I wouldn't mind at all. My husband would take a bit longer to come around, but we could never turn our back on our LO.

I would be proud of my kids if they came out! I support them 100%!!

No one can tell me I can't love my DH so I have no right to tell someone else they can't love who they love regardless of gender.
I will not have a problem in the slightest if my children were to be gay. I want them to be happy.

Friends of mine have a boy, and they encourage him to do everything - the other day, when I was there, he got really into my nail polish, so his mom went and painted his nails for him! It's really inspiring how supportive they are of him and not worried about the idea of gender roles, and I hope I can be a parent like that too. As long as they are happy!

@Meeshling: I love that! I taught a 3 year old preschool class last year and not all parents are that open with their little boys. Girls can climb trees and play with toy cars, but if little boys want to paint their nails like their big sister then its the end of the world.

I think about this a lot since I'm pretty conservative and a Christian, but in the end I think I would be supportive no matter what. I would just discourage promiscuity and any dangerous or destructive behavior no matter what gender they were attracted to.
