How does your LO respond to them when he/she sees them?
We live a 4 hour plane ride away, and she is usually okay when she sees them. But I think she was going through some separation/stranger anxiety at 16 months, and we could not leave her alone with them!!

My mum lives in the UK but we facetime a lot. LO was okay last time we visited, hopefully she will be next time to. MIL lives 3 hours away, but LO seems to really enjoy her when she visits. I don't leave them alone though so I haven't done a true test yet.

My mom moved to Maryland a year ago, and when DD1 saw her two months ago for the first time since she moved, she didn't really know what to call her, but she enjoyed her!

My LO is 2 now and is definitely old enough to remember them. He is cool being alone with them, and each time he sees them it takes less and less time for him to "warm up" to them.

My family is about a 7 hr drive away. LO hasn't seen her since her first birthday and she recently entered a very clingy stage with me. So I'm not sure how she will react when they come visit at the end of this month. Hopefully not bad bc my mom will be sad and she'll be watching her for the week!

My Lo us too young to say but I live far from my nephew and we FaceTime a lot. He knows who I am and asks to FaceTime, but then he always wants to see my dog and not me :). He's 2 and a half. He remembers me when I visit too.

@Mrs. Yoyo: Was it at the 2 year mark that he was okay being left alone with them?
@locavore_mama: I think it's the 16 month mark that they get clingy again! My mom has been pretty sad that LO refuses to go to her. LO won't hug her, and just thinks she's going to take her away from me.

My parents live about an 8 hour drive away. They visit every 3 months and we skype all the time with them. I would have no issue leaving LO with them. In fact, they are watching him when we go to Germany. At first he is a shy but he warms up really quickly. My FIL lives in Hawaii and has only visited once so LO doesn't really know him. My MIL spends very limited time with LO, she pays attention to him only when she can have pictures of herself taken with him. I do not trust her with LO.

I think we're the same distance from our families

My parents just visited us and my MIL was here at the beginning of July. My LO was really apprehensive and shy at first but he warmed up after a day or so. He seemed the most comfortable with my dad although he would always run to me or DH if we were in the room. We did find that if we left LO alone with our parents he did just fine...out of sight, out of mind!

@Freckles: Probably around 18 months, actually. As @Sammyfab says, he does best when neither of us around. Then he's totally content with them if he knows we're not an option!

@Sammyfab: @Mrs. Yoyo: Actually, i left her with my in-laws to go to a dinner and she was fine for a bit, but after a couple of hours she started looking for me and was crying for 45 minutes. I felt awful! My mom came to visit when she was about 13 months and LO was great around her. 16 months? Not so much...

Hmm...I know what worked well for us was taking him outside. Both of our parents would take him to the park or go for a walk to keep the fussies at bay. One morning I went to an appointment then the gym and my dad said the LO went upstairs to look for me and got upset. I think that's when they decided to go for a walk and they were gone for 2 hours because my LO didn't want to go back inside! I definitely think it helps when they're in their own space. I can see how the anxiety would be heightened if they're in an unfamiliar place with an unfamiliar person.

My parents are about a 4 hour plane ride away, and so far my LOs have been alright with my parents. DD needs a little warm up time with my parents, but then is fine, she is 3 and a bit. I don't know how DS will do when we visit next, he will be just shy of 19 months old.

She warms up to my parents much more quickly, but we try to FaceTime a lot with both sets. After a day or so, it's like she sees them all the time.

@Freckles: I think I read somewhere that separation anxiety tends to peak around 15 months or so ... it's probably just a completely natural thing that will fade. Crossing my fingers that it tapers off naturally over the next several months.
Ditto @Sammyfab on going outside. He can stay outside foreverrrr with them.

@Sammyfab: The unfamiliar place definitely made things worse. It got even worse when DH went on a week long trip while we were here. LO looooves going outside, but every time my mom tried to take her outside LO screamed bloody murder!

Not us, but my brother lives an 8 hour drive from us. My niece didn't have an issue with it, because my parents have been doing skype with her since she was a baby. They visit them a lot. Now she's four and she's always looking forward to see her Gramma and Papa. Also, she and DS have a great cousin relationship, even though they only see each other a few times a year. We all make sure they're able to keep in touch.

Both of our families live in different countries but we Skype/FaceTime frequently. When we do see them, DS plays shy around them for like 10 minutes, but is fine after that.

My parents have only met her once. We went home for a month when she was 8 months old and she LOVED them. She went right to my mom and was grinning and laughing. She gets super excited whenever we Skype with my mom, which is about twice a week.
