My husband has asked me to move countries twice and I was totally fine with it. We also know we will leave our current location at some point in the next few years, and it will be entirely dependent on my husband's career (I have a portable job). Moving away from the familiar isn't for everyone, you really have to weigh the pros and cons and decide what is right for you and your family.

Heck yes, I'd move in a heartbeat. I love the energy and experience of a new place, especially NY or SF!

We live 5 minutes from both of our families, my mom is DS's primary caregiver (for free) while we work, and I am the primary breadwinner (by a lot), so we rely almost solely on my career.

The only way it would ever happen is if something happened to my parents (or they would move with us) and DH suddenly turned into the breadwinner.

Nope! Not doing it! I hate change and I hate being away from family.

Though I guess really, it would be a discussion. We both have careers, so him wanting to move would really impact me and my career. So it would really depend on where, how much he would make, the career opportunities for BOTH of us, child care situations, etc. It would have to be some sort of life-changing job to make me willing to quit my job and uproot our lives!

I would do it if it had a high probability of being DH's dream job/one where he would be really happy and fulfilled. I was willing to consider moving to CA from NYC when it seemed like there was a good option for him (although it ended up not working out).

We have talked about this a lot. I sah and DH is the primary breadwinner (well obviously since I sah but even before). We live 4-5 hour drive from my family and cross country from his parents. But we have been in our city for several years and I definitely have a network of friends and support here that I would hate to leave.

But, if he could not find a job that satisfied him and made him happy, and he could find his dream job somewhere else, we would very seriously consider it. He's been half heartedly looking for a new job for a while, and is unhappy at his current company. I need him to seriously look here before I'm willing to really consider looking elsewhere. But it could happen. I just hope it doesn't.

It is easier since we only have one career to consider though, and we aren't close to most family anyway.

I don't think he would be open to it let alone bring it up himself but if we had talked about it before and agreed to be open to it, I would consider it. I like being near family but he has a very specific job and he says people who are most successful are those who are willing to move where the work is. He's doing well enough as it is, we make it work. I make more money right now but I could do my job from anywhere in the world so that wouldn't be much of a factor.

I knew before we got married that a long distance move was in our future, if not multiple long distance moves. it looks like it will be coming up soon.

I'm excited because it means our whole lives won't feel so temporary anymore.

I would do it, Dh has already moved for me once and we're planning on it again next year. If he found a reason to move I would def support him

I would be willing to consider it, although it depends on where we would be moving to. We've actually had discussions about it before (and at least once in the past, I was the one with an opportunity in another state). I think I'm open to it though because I actually sort of like the idea of "starting over" sometimes. In our case, our current city has the best (as of right now) opportunities for both DH and me plus our family is here. I think if either of those things were not true, we would probably leave. A sad thing about this city is that most of our friends have left. There are other cities we could go to where I'd have more friends than here, even though I grew up here and went to college here.

I would move, even though we have both our families close, my side travels a lot and my sisters are all growing up and moving.....
I would be ok with it, both sides of our families have the means to travel so they could/would come see is as would we!
My job is one where I could easily move!

I would be open to it, but not for NYC or SF. Both DH and I work in the tech industry. DH can work practically anywhere, but I work in a very specialized field and I have the best prospects in Boston (where I am now), NYC, SF, or Research Triangle NC. Living in Boston is expensive and I am not up for making our commutes worse and bringing down our standard of living by moving to NYC or SF.

But we have discussed moving to Research Triangle. If he came to me and said he really wanted to make this move for his career and could give solid reasons why it would be better I'd give it serious consideration. Ultimately, we decided not to move because we found a great house to buy and we like living relatively near our families and friends. We'd have absolutely no support system in NC.

What does your husband do? Is he a dev or qa?

If my husband was able to secure a position in the area of his dreams, I would be more than supportive. It would be difficult but we all need to take chances.

I'd be open to it, as it's something we've already done several times. DH and I are both in the military and usually move every 2-4 yrs for a new posting. The important thing for us is to stay together. We haven't always been; 2 of the 6 yrs we've been married we lived 3 1/2 hrs apart, which was a choice we made that furthered both our careers. Now that we have a child, we wouldn't be willing to do that again. We're currently much closer to his family (2 hrs) than mine (across the country), but we make every effort to stay connected to both, via phone, Skype, and visits.

While having your family support system nearby is desirable, being fulfilled career-wise is also important - at least for us. And getting to know a new city is pretty fun. We look on each move as both an adventure and a challenge, and so far it's worked well for us.

I would do it if it meant greater opportunities for is both career wise because I think you have to strike while the iron is hot, especially with the likes of tech. No saying when the landscape will change again, so I wouldn't want to miss the opportunity. That said I live in NYC, moved here from London for a job so I'm biased because I'm used to living away from family.

I think it highly depends on your personality. For me I wouldn't think twice! I would love to move to NYC! We moved to SF when we were much younger and childless. But I don't think we can or would like to raise our kids there. If you have kids, then that's a totally different game. Good luck!

@Andrea: our house is one of the things that gave me pause initially. I don't love it, but we put a lot of money into it to make it look nice for us. If we move in 3 years we will have only been there 6-7 years and may not see a great return. One thing that sold me is that we would get a housing subsidy for 5 years and could just rent out our home. Who knows if his org will still do that in a few years, but it makes the idea of moving a bit easier.

I would do it if the opportunity covered my income too and then some. But we both come from families that moved anywhere for job opps.

Short answer: yes. And I already have.
Long answer: when my husband took a job with his current company, we were told advancement meant moving. We didn't have kids yet, but i was fine with it. In my industry (parks and recreation) moving up is pretty hard. Most municipalities have small parks and rec departments and one spends YEARS in "middle management" getting small raises. But again, no one gets into parks and rec for the money. I was fine leaving my job for his advancement. It turned out that he got his first promotion/transfer offer the day we found out we were pregnant with our first. Not awesome timing, but we made do.
We then moved again when our first was 4 months old. We did happen to live near DH's family after college, but that was only because I happened to get a job in the area. I haven't lived within an 8 hour drive of my family since college. neither of us grew up near family either, so it wasn't part of our paradigm.

I'd start packing my shit right now! But I hate where we live, so moving anywhere else sounds like a dream.
