Mine broke in bed while I was sleeping, it woke me up though. It kinda felt like I lost all bladder control but there was a lot of fluid so it just kept coming out lol...
eta: with my first lo it sprung a leak before it really broke so it just dribbled down my leg, it still felt like pee that I had no control over though.

it started leaking the same time my contractions started, but when it completely broke, there was no doubt. it was way more than the longest pee ever. it just kept gushing out!

It actually really hurt and I started crying, it was the start of my labor. After my water broke my labor suddenly became very intense. And it kept coming throughout the rest of my labor. So yeah I couldn't have missed it!!

@MsLipGloss: I thought it was something else when I had a teeny tiny trickle. But then after lunch when I went to stand up, it was a giant gush, so there was no denying it.

I thought I had peed a little, but it was too much to be a pee. Then it just kept trickling out, never gushed. Also, it smelled sweet not ammonia-y like pee.

No doubt in my mind, I felt a huge pop and gush! Like a balloon popped inside me, but it didn't hurt for me.
I leaned over to pick up a pen, felt the pop, stood up with an "Oh Crap!" and raced to the bathroom. My husband thought I ran out to throw up, then I explained that we would see the baby in the next 24 hours, he said "Oh Crap!".

I was in bed but I felt a pop and it woke me up. It was like a REALLY long pee. Thankfully I had gotten a Poise sample in the mail that I planned to save for that reason.LOL It worked for the 10min drive to the hospital.

@aMohror: Thrilled and excited Oh Crap's, but still that was both of our first reactions!
@MsMamaBear: A Poise pad is a great idea- I soaked through about 8 heavy/overnight pads while waiting for contractions to start!!

When my stepsister's water broke she opened the bathroom door and yelled to me that she couldn't stop peeing and did I think her water had broken? My response was "How am I supposed to know? Ask your mom!" (She was 17, I was 18, we were both clearly clueless).

mine broke when i was taking a nap. i had a pantyliner on and it felt like a trickle... it soaked the pantyliner but it wasn't enough to soak through my undies. i walked to the bathroom, changed my pantyliner... thought maybe i had accidentally peed?? and my pantyliner got soaked through again.
i didn't feel any contractions and had no pain! so i wasn't really sure my water broke. but my husband was convinced and we got confirmation from our doula that that was definitely my water. it wasn't that dramatic though.

@prettylizy - that's pretty much what happened to me!

I was about to lay down on the couch to watch TV and thought I felt baby A (I had twins) kick really hard for the first time in a long while and felt that I heard a pop! My water didn't start flowing til almost 30 mins later on the freeway en route to the hospital when I suddenly felt the gush of water. I had called the on call Dr. (after hours) because there was a tinge of blood in my urine after that & she said it could be my cervix expanding but go to L & R to be checked out just in case.

I was eating, suddenly felt like I really needed to pee, so I stood up and as soon as I took a step there was a HUGE gush. My jeans were sopping wet and my sneakers were all squishy when I stepped, lol. It kept coming too, there was sooo much water.

After being in labor for 24 hours, I finally conceded to get an epidural. It happened about 1/2 hour later and I felt NOTHING. The nurse had to tell me. It was midnight and just getting relief--I was pretty delirious by then.

Mine sprung a leak. At first, I thought it was more of my mucus plug or I had wet myself a little so I went to bed. When I woke up to pee later, it was a much, much larger gush so I knew what it was at that point.

I was sitting Indian-style on the couch and felt a little burst. The best way I can describe it is that it felt like a balloon had been over filled and was slowly bursting.... not like a pop, but like a loss of structural integrity
I had a little leak and then went to the bathroom. The flow was about the same rate as peeing, but the smell and feeling were different.

It feels like a pop and then there was a gush of water. It freaked me out.

No. I don't think so. I have just been paranoid for the last day or so that I might have sprung a leak. This really is TMI, but here goes . . . I have had very clear, liquidy, discharge over the past 24 hours (no smell at all) that has not resembled anything I have previously had during pregnancy. A couple of times, I felt like I *leaked* a little after getting up out of my chair, and when I got out of bed yesterday.

@MsLipGloss: I'd say call and ask! They can do the litmus test thing to test if it's amniotic fluid or not, I believe. Then at least you'll know

I was sitting at a restaurant and felt a pop so I went to the bathroom to check and as soon as I sat down on the toilet, there was a gush of water. And with every step I took after that, there was a little gush.

@MsLipGloss: I would call your doctor. The day before my water broke, I had the same symptoms so there's a very good chance that could happen to you!
pineapple / 12526 posts
@MsLipGloss: That's what mine did! It would gush a bit after I was sitting or laying down for a while. It smells kind of sweet. I'd definitely call L&D and go in to be checked. It's a quick swab to see if it's broken or not.

Mine was more of a slow leak than a gush. When I went to the hospital because my water broke, they didn't believe me! They swabbed me like 3 times and kept saying it was negative for amniotic fluid. I kept telling them that I'd never peed my pants before, nevermind for 45 minutes straight, and they'd better check me into the hospital anyway to find out what I was leaking. Eventually they tested the towel I was wearing as a pad (very glamorous) and it was positive.

I was at the hospital about the take a lap around to help move the contractions along when my water broke in the hall. I could definitely tell it was my water breaking because there was so much of it and it was a huge gush. I also lost my mucus plug shortly after.

I was in the hospital trying to sleep, I rolled over in bed and felt the 'pop'. I knew from reading online that it was my water breaking and when I stood up, water gushed out everywhere.

Yanno, I frequently comment on posts regarding"what if" questions with a call your Doc response . . . and then when I am unsure, I waffle on whether to call or not. /facepalm
It's just that I read (aka *googled*) how rare it is for your water to break early (I am 32wks/5 days) . . . so I just chalked it up to paranoia and, well, paranoia! But all of you are right - I really need to call it in - thanks!

i was 37.5wks when my water broke while i was on the toilet so i thought it was pee at first. then when i got up, i felt a tiny gush. after that it trickled here and there.

So, after a few hours with the lovely people in L&D (I really do love my practice group and hospital!), I am happy to report there is no leak and butterbean is safe and sound.
*phew* I feel silly (now that I know she's fine), but I feel so much better!

@MsLipGloss: good!! better to know everything is okay, so don't feel silly!

My water broke in the hospital. It was a warm gush! Many uncontrollable warm gushes.
