I've had five great experiences and one awful one.
The awful one was in Spain and the house we rented was pretty much toxic. I guess there was an insect infestation so they bombed the place with chemicals. We got there late at night and it was absolutely horrible but we had no other options so we spent the night (only five or six hours) alternating who was awake to watch the other one breathing. Called the owner first thing in the am and got all of our money refunded. That part was good I guess.

We have used Homeaway and VRBO to stay in San Diego and NYC 4-5 times and we always had a good experience. We just look for units with lots of reviews and pictures, and that are not occupied but specifically used as short term vacation rentals.

I think I used Homeaway, but it's pretty much the same. I had a good experience! I think it depends on the landlord.

We've used VRBO four times, all good experiences. I usually try to look for a rental with reviews and pictures.

We've used it a couple of times and were very pleased. But we only went with places with lots of pictures and several reviews.

I didn't do the renting (went as a nanny with my cousin and her kids), but the whole experience was wonderful! There was a small problem when we got there (I forget what) - the owner of the house came out immediately and it was taken care of in no time. Wonderfully maintained and very clean.

Excellent! We rented a house on the Big Island of Hawaii and it was even better than we expected! No problems at all.

Excellent! Just find a listing with plenty of reviews & make sure you're comfortable with your correspondence with the owner/manager.
We used VRBO to book a rental for our honeymoon. It was seriously amazing. We rented a house on Great Exuma in the Bahamas. 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, private pool, private white sand beach -- only $1000 for seven days! The owners lived next door & were wonderful. They helped us arrange a car rental for the week & gave us advice on food and shopping. I'd do it again and again. I'm ready to go back right now.
