I'm not really sure. When I went in for my 39 week appointment my midwife told me if I made it to 40 weeks than they'd start talking about scheduling an induction, but I had him before that so I don't know when it would have been scheduled for.

It was my understanding that my hospital won't induce before 42 weeks without a good reason. However if I was induced they would try to schedule it to coincide with one of our clinic's OBs being on rotation at the hospital, so it's possible that's why she'd want to start the conversation early--they'd want to give me a chance to meet said OB (I saw a midwife who didn't have delivery privileges at our hospital).

Well, you know I'm being induced at 39, but I don't know if that's average. I know it's her absolute minimum except in cases with preeclampsia or things like that. She's a very hands off, bend the food restrictions rules kind of doctor, so I was actually surprised she suggested an induction. Here's hoping you go soon!!

Normal here is 41 weeks. If I were going to be induced though I'd try to wait as long as possible in hopes of going into labor on my own.

I think going to 42 weeks is widely accepted as safe but I think my OB would definitely induce around 41 weeks if you really wanted.

My OBs is 1 week past due date and some people I know were 10 days?

Due to how far I was progressing my OB actually scheduled my induction for my due date. But LO arrived 2 days early.

I believe mine would let me go to 42 weeks (midwife practice, very hands off, pro natural whatever you can do). I think they would start talking about it at 41.

@deerylou: It's only dangerous if there are other risk factors-- like the placenta isn't doing so hot, fluid levels are low, blood pressure rising, big baby whose head won't fit out... So, if nothing else looks off, then there wouldn't be any danger. From what I understand at least.

My sister was 10 days late with my nephew and it meant she couldn't deliver in the birthing center, but had to do it in the hospital. Her midwives were still present, but she ended up with an emergency c-section anyway, with an OB.

My practice is the same as yours--they don't induce until 42 weeks. I'm happy with the policy, as unless there are extenuating circumstances/risk factors, there's no reason to induce before 42 weeks.

My OB and midwife does not like to go past 41 weeks because "a lot can happen in that last week" (their reasoning was that things can become hostile inside and/or baby can stop growing).

My midwife practice schedules induction for 42 weeks unless there are other risk factors. I would have had a BPP at 41 weeks to screen, but I went into labor at 40w6d instead!

The absolute latest my doctor lets her patients go is 41 weeks. She tried to schedule me for 40 weeks 5 days but I was able to push for 41 weeks 1 day and she agreed to it after checking my fluid levels and knowing that the baby was still moving as normal. I was also terrified of pitocin, but went in to labor on my way to the hospital that night to be induced. They still gave me pitocin but not a high dose, and baby was born the next morning!:)
