My parents are incredibly generous with us and us with them. My husband's side of the family definitely gives more modest gifts. It's just coming from different upbringings. I feel like my MIL gives my husband a sweater for his bday and Christmas every year (ha!) while on the other hand, my parents always give me jewelry.

Both sets of parents are extremely generous. If we could afford to be generous back, we would. Hopefully someday.

For the most part we all give gifts to each other. Except Chanukah.... DH's family believes that it's just for the kids (We're still considered kids) so we don't gift to his parents and they gift to us.

My inlaws are very, very generous - they always make a fuss of us on our birthays, buy expensive presents and take us for dinner. We can't really afford to be so generous but they understand - we buy chocolates, flowers, that kind of thing. We bought them a Kindle for Christmas and they told us off for spending so much on them!!

My mum is generous too but because she doesn't have much money at all generous for her is giving us book tokens or £50 between us for a meal out. I always make sure to buy her gifts that match or exceed the value of the gifts she gives us because she would notice if she was giving more, if that makes sense? She would feel hurt if we didn't make the effort back.

My family are HUGE gift givers during the holidays/special occasions, which in turn has made me a huge gift giver. My in-laws aren't into gift giving, but they help us out a lot in other ways so I think that balances out!

Holidays are big in my family, and we spend Christmas and birthdays with them since we live in the same town. Birthdays have multiple gifts and dinner out. Christmas is crazy with lots of nice gifts for each person and overflowing stockings. The in-laws give kind of crappy (not money-wise but thought-wise) gifts for holidays. Usually just one thing, like a random scarf or something. Again, I don't care how much it costs but they don't really put too much thought into what they give. My husband gets a sweatshirt or something that he wouldn't really wear from his mom. We (well, I) still try to get them stuff we think they'd like and don't care if it's not proportionate.
