DS: My son is named Charlie, and I've discovered that there are a growing number of female Charlies. Also, a lot of dogs named Charlie. So I guess his name is not gender neutral, and but is species neutral.

DD: Her name is Olive, and I've never met a male Olive. I've been meeting a ton of Olivers and Oliviers though, but I don't count that as the same thing. So yes, her name is largely gender specific! But I've met a lot of female dogs named Olive, especially after that book about Olive (the dog who thought she was a reindeer) came out and became a cartoon with Drew Barrymore.

So in conclusion:

* Charlie: Gender neutral
* Olive: Not gender neutral

And both of my kids' names are commonly used by dogs.
