I'm a California bee, 31 weeks and I just got a jury summons for the day before I plan to start my maternity leave - 4 weeks before I'm due. I have the option to postpone duty for 6 months however the idea of jury duty right when I start back at work with a toddler and a baby isn't any more appealing. I'm thinking I should just do it.
Am I missing options?

I postponed once and ended up not getting another summons for 4 years! When I did get my next one I didn't even get called in. I would just do it. I'm sure even if you do get called in on e they see you are pregnant you will probably be dismissed pretty quickly.

I got one 4 days before my wedding. I reported, and then when asked if I had any time.conflicts I told them I was getting married that week and I for to go home! And I for the credit for reporting. I would go if I were you, and just say you can't serve past the first day because you are due with your baby!

I would probably go now. I agree with PP that they likely won't select you when they see how pregnant you are.

I know someone who went the day after her due date. She had to stay all day but she figured no one in their right mind would put a full term pregnant woman on a jury.
I found out I was pregnant a few days after I postponed my jury duty so I can't pull that move.

I was summoned in CA, at 36 weeks. My OB wrote a letter, excusing me. It's been a few months shy of two years and I haven't gotten another request for duty, yet.

I'd probably go and pretend like I could go into labor at any point...then they probably won't choose you!

I would go too, the judge or jurors would probably excuse you. They don't want to risk it either.

I got one at 3 weeks before my EDD. I was able to postpone and then I moved before I could be summonsed again.

I went two months before I was due. They ask if you have a conflict if you are chosen, if it were a short trial they would keep you but release for a long trial. Otherwise you get the credit if you are not selected. It seems silly but I would just go.

And make sure to mention how uncomfortable it would be for you to sit for hours all day and how many bathroom breaks you would need to take! I'm assuming this would be true for you at 36 weeks pregnant...

You should go and once you're called into the courtroom they will ask if there's any reason why you can't commit, tell them you are due in 4 weeks but of course could go into labor at any time between now and then. They'll let you go!
I also saw a woman at my last jury duty session who had a 3 month old. She told them that she is breastfeeding and they let her go. So that's also an option if you can manage to go while still on Mat leave but not yet back at work.
You can postpone for 6 months but can really reschedule for any time up to 6 months.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I must be soooooo lucky then, since I've been called FIVE times in the last 12 years (lived in 3 different states, moved before having to do one of them). Was actually on one jury which was a pretty interesting experience, especially since I hated my job at the time, the rest I showed up and say around all day then got sent home.

I would just go and get the credit (although my brother is repeatedly summoned!)
I was summoned once, 6 years ago while I was student teaching, and I postponed because I couldn't miss a day, but I've never been summoned since.

I agree with others that you should go, simply to fulfill your obligation and not have to worry about getting another summons. There's no way the judge will put you on a jury at 36 weeks pregnant. They would have to stop the trial each and every time you need the bathroom.That said, if you do postpone - you can continue postponing as long as you're breastfeeding (in California, at least) and they don't come an investigate to see if you really are!

@Foodnerd81: see you are super lucky! After the second time though I probably wouldn't want to get summoned again unless of course I was picked the first two times. Well, as long as the court house had good reception I would be A-OK surfing the net all day uninterrupted.

At our court house they had free wi-fi but only a limited number of connections available! So I bet some people were pretty bored...
