Just bid on and lost a house for the seventh time

@oliviaoblivia: would you do a tiny bungalow to pop up? There are so many of those around here!

@woodentulip: that's what we just lost out on.

@oliviaoblivia: Well shoot. Our neighbour is an older widow...I wonder what would happen if you knocked on her door? Her's is a bungalow...

Well, if you keep looking around here...I'm sure you would love it. On my block alone there are 8 kids under 4. And that's just one side of the street. On the other side of the street are almost as many elderly alcoholics, but they keep to themselves.

@woodentulip: just how old are we talking? The house we bid on was vacated by a 93 year old.

@oliviaoblivia: 93 and still in their own home? If we could all be so lucky!!

She's not nearly that old. But honestly, I think that the house is more than she can handle. We moved here in December, and I can count on one hand the number of times I have seen her outside. And 2 of those times was to pick up the paper.

@oliviaoblivia: Well, good luck though! And if you keep looking around here and have questions about the area at all, let me know. We didn't have anyone who lived right in this area to ask, so I would be happy to answer for you!!

@oliviaoblivia: Oh wow, very competitive. That sort of makes me glad dh and I can't afford to buy... we definitely couldn't afford to be offering 20% over asking for the average home! I hope you find something soon. It will be worth it!

@oliviaoblivia: The housing market is so brutal there. My mom was trying to buy a house a few years ago in North York and she lost out on about 7 or 8 different properties before she was able to get one!

    $1,500. Stab me.

I can't even imagine! Did the winning bidder outbid you on price? I would be so crazy, especially in a cash transaction.

@looch: we were outbid by $1,500.

UPDATE: the winning bidder is considering walking away from his contract if we give him $5k to do so. Our agent thinks it would be smart to take the deal. In the months that it will take us to find and win another house we'll spend at least twice that much in rent. But it sounds kind of scammy to me. Bees...what do I do?!

Oh geez you were only outbid by $1,500?! Ugh!

I honestly don't know what we would do about that $5,000 deal. I think that I would be tempted, especially after everything you have gone through, but it really sounds sketchy to me. I mean the other buyer didn't know what your offer was, but what if they go around and do this kind of thing trying to scam other buyers? I have never heard of this kind of deal, but I have only bought one house, and it was the first house we put an offer in on.

ohhhh, I am SO sorry. I TOTALLY understand. we were going through that at the beginning of this year and it is so so sooo tough out there. Things are going in HOURS. And from experience, coming in second is absolutely the worst. You would almost rather be way out of the running.

Our worst was coming in second after a bidding war and lost because the other people waived their appraisal and home inspection. On a 70 year old house! People are doing crazy crazy things.

We got ours only because the seller of that one we lost on gave a heads up to the seller of our now home and we got in with a contract before it really went on the market--much to the chagrin of about 50+ other potential buyers who didn't even get to see it. Best of luck and BIG hugs. It WILL happen for you.

@HazelEyes: the house we bid on was built in 1943. We offered cash and no conditions. No inspection, no financing. It's absolutely crazy out there.

I keep going back and forth.

@oliviaoblivia: That seems a little iffy to me, but I would be tempted. How much do you love the house??

  17. oliviaoblivia

    pineapple / 12793 posts

@Smurfette: I know. The house is fine but needs about $150k to make it nice. It's really the neighborhood that we'd be buying it for cause stuff doesn't come up for sale that often. Dh thinks the listing agent shopped our offer to the winning bidder and that this is a scam for him to make five grand for nothing.

    wonderful pear / 26210 posts

I absolutely would not pay the current winning bidder any money, that's just ridiculous.

@oliviaoblivia: If you love the neighborhood and don't think you will find another house, then I would just question if the neighborhood is worth $5K to you. If you find another house in another neighborhood you don't love as much, $5K doesn't seem that bad to me.

Holy cow!! I'm so sorry about that.

We're in the opposite situation where we are - houses sit for months before they sell! Come live in Kansas City!

Ugh, that sucks to have to make that decision!

DH had to buy our house for us before we got married (I was living in a different state so he had to do it alone), and got outbid 4 times. He ended up settling on our home - even though it's great and we're going to stay here forever - we wished we'd have held out a little longer.

Holy cow, I wish the market was anything like that here. There are insane amounts of homes available in Florida. My sister and I have had a house on the market for 2 years because the market is so saturated. Sorry it's taking you so long to find a home!

So I just read through this thread, and I think the $5k thing sounds really sketchy. From where you are, though, I could see it being tempting! Let us know what you end up doing.

Sucks but paying the $5K seems like a scam. It feels really weird to me. Good luck!

@oliviaoblivia: do you have a lawyer you could run it by? It sounds sketchy to me...

The $5k thing between your agent and the buyer who won sounds not only sketchy but potentially illegal? I'm NOT a lawyer but I would think maybe there's something up there. Maybe start another thread about it? I would think if that buyer backs out then the owner would want to go to the 2nd highest buyer- I don't see why you would have to pay off the buyer. And the fact that your agent seems to be in on this, to me says TIME TO GET A NEW AGENT. I get that $5k might be worth it to get into that neighborhood but I'd be worried about anything else sketchy that might have gone on or might go on during the process. I don't know if $5k would be worth the worry for me. Good luck!! I HATE that you have to deal with this
