I know there are plenty of families that live in apartments. I don't think there is anything wrong with raising a family in an apt.

I think all that matters is how good of a parent you are. It doesn't matter if you live in a studio apartment, a 2 bedroom apartment, a rented townhouse or a house. As long as you make it work, you'll be fine.

I would love to move into a house but it's not the best time for us. There was a time where we hoped to buy a home before starting a family. Unfortunately, life got in the way and it didn't work out that way. We have already plans on how we transform our apartment to make room for a nursery. It's going to work for us. We will hopefully buy a home in a couple years so apartment living is currently temporary for us.

ETA: Think of it this way, living in apartment with a baby will be slightly easier. You won't have to deal with all the expenses of a home. Plus, now a days, I'm seeing more and more people having trouble being homeowners. There are definitely ways you can make apartment living be more positive.

@Bao: We grew up in an apartment and we had a fun happy childhood! Like sorrycharlie said, you can take them out to parks, on hikes etc!

@sorrycharlie: hey! kind of off subject but not really: did it work out with your housing and the parents?? I remember there being an issue with a possible move and wanting a bfp to delay that!

We live in NYC and so are 99.9999% going to be in an apartment for the rest of our lives! Both DH and I grew up in an apt and I really don't think it's a big deal...we weren't worse off for it at all. I think it's much easier--you don't have to worry about maintaining a lawn or a house, and if something breaks there's generally a super in the building to come fix it.

There's nothing wrong with raising a LO in an apartment. I actually think it's nice that everything's on one floor. We have a 3 level condo. Pain in the derriere!

I have never in my 28 years NOT lived in an apartment. My bedroom growing up was a room divided with office cubicle walls to make two bedrooms for me and my brother.

I consider myself normally abnormal with reasonable quirks that have nothing to do with living in an apartment.

Our baby will be born when we are living in an apartment.

@chopsuey119: we live in a pretty tiny house. I love it because nothing is far away.

My dad grew up in a house... and he shared a hallway for his bedroom with his brother. I'm sure he would.have loved having an apartment with his own room.

Is this a serious thread? I mean, if your child has a roof over their head, they are luckier than a lot of other kids growing up on this planet.

Anywho, I don't buy into the whole expected order of stuff. I just do what is right for me and my family.

In this day and age with all the worries in the world, I just have a hard time believing that this is a true worry.

I grew up in a house but since being on my own, have only lived in apartments. We live in an apartment now and see no problem raising our baby in an apartment. There's several parks and playgrounds close by. The baby has her own room and plenty of space to play and hang out.

It was important to us to buy before TTC (well, we bought before getting engaged!), but we’re in our 30’s/40’s so we’re in a different place financially and career stability-wise than some younger couples. If buying is going to make you house-poor, then it doesn’t make much financial sense to do so if you can rent and sock away money in savings at the same time.

I don’t think owning a home is a requisite for having children; you just should make the best financial decision for you and your family. I think people (especially older generations) tied owning property to financial stability, and that isn’t really the “rule” it once was, nowadays. It makes sense to try to be as financially stable as possible before TTC, but whether that means buying or renting is a personal decision.

we moved to a big house from an apartment when i was 16. i think growing up in a smaller space was much better for our family. we were much, much closer. once we moved to a big house, everyone stayed in their own rooms and we hardly saw each other. when we were in a small apartment, shared rooms, etc. we were forced to interact.

that said i'd still prefer to live in a house, but a just big enough house. not a house with any extra room.

I lived in a couple of apartments as a kid, and I never minded. I actually liked them! We'll be having our first in a one bedroom (just due to lease timing, we don't want to move RIGHT before the baby because what if he/she comes a couple of weeks early?) and moving to a 2 bdrm hopefully around when the baby is 6 months old. My parents had me in a studio for the first few months!
eta- And the move is more for us than the baby!
