Hi!
I've graduated from my RE and gave my regular OB appt on 3/1 and pregnant with twins My mom was suggesting that anyone pregnant with multiples also meets with a MFM dr as well. Anyone have experience? How often did you see one? Thanks!

First of all, congratulations! Yes, my Dr did refer me to see a MFM for a couple appointmenst. If I remember correctly, I saw them 2-3 times throughout the pregnancy. They did some tests, in particular I remember them doing an in depth scan where they looked at the babies hearts. Otherwise, I saw my regular dr for appointments.

Congratulations! I know with both of my single pregnancies my OB refers to a MFM for both the first tri NT scan and the second tri anatomy scan.

Congratulations! I saw MFM once a month from 16 weeks-32 weeks with my IVF twins. They tracked my cervical length and checked on the babies' fluid each time. My sister (also IVF twins) only saw MFM twice - once for anatomy scan and once for a specific scan of their hearts (everything was fine, just a precaution). Both of our twins were di-di, which is the least complicated kind of twins, and neither of us had any major issues during pregnancy. My dr's office is just more cautious, which is why I was sent to MFM more often.

@twodoghouse: interesting how it can vary office to office.
Another question to you helpful ladies...did you see MD's, nurse practitioners, midwives or a combo?

@Mrs. Pinky: I went to a large office with a lot of OBs and midwives. I mostly saw the OBs since I was required to be delivered by an OB in the OR at my hospital. I did have midwives present at my birth, but my OB did the deliveries.

@Mrs. Pinky: I think I was in my 2nd tri when I first saw them. Like Twodoghouse mentioned, one of the appts was a special heart scan. If I remember correctly, they do them as a precaution in IVF pregnancies, which I was. I only saw an OB while I was pregnant. He did tell me at one point that I could have my scans a the MFM dr or continue to have them at my regular OB office. I chose to continue with my regular dr since I was more comfortable there and they were amazing.

I only saw an MFM and I would absolutely insist on seeing one if I were in your shoes. Twins are a high-risk pregnancy, particularly when they are assisted as in your case. Many OBs like to think that a twin pregnancy is not much different from a singleton but the reality is that the risks are higher and you need to be more closely monitored than if you were pregnancy with one. Good luck and congrats on your twins!

I was with a Perinatologist for all visits including my first appt after RE.

I was pregnant with IVF twins and never had to see one (and there was one in the same building as my OB). My doc was kind of the catch all of the IVF twins from my specific RE- they were friends- so she is quite experienced. The only special thing I had for twins was a few extra ultrasounds. My doc didn't even make me come in extra! So rad.

My twins are 5 already so I'm a bit fuzzy on when I started going to mfm but I think it was at 12 weeks. My ob could tell at 8 weeks that they were identical. My twins were identical mono-di so at risk for twin to twin transfusion so I went every 2 weeks and then every week once I hit about 32 weeks. Fortunately they never had any issues.

I never saw a mfm with my twin pregnancy. My twins were di/di and the doctors and we bought thought they were fraternal. Turns out they are identical! Since they didn't share a sac or placenta, I was low risk as a twin pregnancy, but still automatically high risk because it was twins.

I asked this same question when I was pregnant with my twins. My OB said it was up to me to decide if I wanted to regularly go to an MFM. She wasn't worried and the twins were growing well so I stayed with her (my OB). I did have some complications (HG, SCB, PPROM) so I did have to see the the MFM 3x.
My twins are doing well.
Congrats on your twins!
Oh, I had IVF fraternal twins.

Congrats! I think my OB didn't refer fraternal twins to an MFM unless there was something else going on, but since ours were mono-di (identical and shared a placenta), I was seen every other week by the MFM to take measurements and monitor for twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome.
