Microwave issue

I tried to google this... Can't seem to find any information.

I came home today and my mom told me the microwave shut off. Like no display showing completely off.

I asked what she did. She said nothing.

After some more questions I figured out she ran the microwave for 30 minutes with nothing in it thinking she was just using the timer part which she has seen me do all the time. But she pressed cook time instead of timer time.

Is it a goner or will it turn back on eventually?

Eta it has been over an hour since it turned off and still completely dead.

So sad DH says your magnetron might be fried, or maybe a fuse is blown. .

This may be a long shot, but call an appliance repair man or better yet a realtor that may know a guy. Not quite the same, but our realtor sent over his appliance guy after the brand's repairman said our microwave was a lost cause. Ours just needed it's handle replaced. Cost was $85 vs brand new microwave + labor.

This may be stupid, but have you tried unplugging it and re-plugging it in?

Our microwave weirdly shut off the other day, and after replugging it in, it works fine.

@ValentineMommy: Definitely not a stupid suggestion - that "fixed" my microwave in an apartment I was renting one time! I figure it's always worth a try, though this may be a different issue.

Thanks ladies for the input.

My mom broke our over the range microwave that came with our townhouse/condo when we bought it.

We went to Home Depot last night, we wanted to get the same model but it has been discontinued so we got the newer model but it won't be delivered and installed till Tuesday. So we are without a microwave till then unless we get a counter top one, but then we will have two microwaves when our new one comes in? or we have to store the counter top one? So we are just going to wait.

@ValentineMommy: We totally did this too! Haha. Yeah that didn't work.

I guess I'll see how it's like not to have a microwave for a few days...

@Raindrop: As for a countertop one to tide you over, do you have a Freecycle or Buy Nothing group in your area? I see them on there a lot. Then you can just put it back on there when you're done using it. Just a thought.

I lived without a microwave for almost a week. I was miserable and missed it so much. It was also an over the range microwave, and DH decided to replace it with a range hood instead (we had one sitting in our basement that we bought 6 years ago). I opted for a small microwave, and it's mounted to the cabinet.

I told a few people in RL so far and most of them just told me to get a cheapy on the counter one and junk it when I'm done. What am I made of money?!?!

More microwave drama!! Turns out we are special. We have a granite back splash that came with the townhouse when we bought it. Home depot guy asked if the granite was behind the microwave ... we didn't know. We emailed our community and everyone that replied said it only goes up to the microwave so we are good. I put a knife down the edge backing to see if I can feel a different between the granite and the drywall but I didn't ... I was very worried!

Turns out since the new microwave was an inch taller the guys refused to install anyways since they will have to drill into the inch of granite they could see. They did however removed our microwave and it turns out we are special and the granite goes all the way up to the cabinet above the microwave. Yay us! *sarcasm*

Just called home depot and they are like wow ... 99% of homes only have granite to the bottom of the microwave so they actually can't quote a new install price. They said they will have to get back to us. Also they warned us that it will cost 100+ more to install because they need to use special tools to drill into the granite.

Well I have lived without a microwave this long. BUT this is super annoying!!

I'm just microwave venting now.

Just got the call back from home depot. Turns out that this will cost 100 dollars extra just for them to send out a special installer but on top of that... depending on how complex the installer feels the job is... it will be 200-400 or even more on top of that to get this installed. Which s more than our microwave is worth!!!

I don't know what to do... I'm actually really upset about how much this is costing right now. Like head on desk upset.

@Raindrop: could you call a countertop company and ask them for a quote to remove the top part of the granite? Since they already have the tools it might be cheaper!

@Mrs. Lion: oh that is a good idea!! Thank you for the suggestion! We already booked the new installer. DH is kind of tired of this whole thing and said lets just spend whatever. But when we replace this one.. I think we will be more prepared.

@Raindrop: Honestly, I'd call Lowes and see what they can give you. The installers with HD gave us such crap about our dishwasher because whoever installed the hardwood in our kitchen didn't install it under the appliances/cabinets. They told us we would have to buy a special appliance. Turns out that that is NOT TRUE and we went to Lowes, bought the exact same model, and all the installer needed to do was unscrew our counter (laminate) from our cabinets, lift it up, and slide in the dishwasher.

@avivoca: Hm.. good suggestion! Thanks! We actually went to Lowes first but they didn't have the line we were looking for... which in the grand scheme might not been a big deal but for some reason we wanted to stick with our brand and line because we are stickers to thing. I mean we use the same brand of diapers and formula that the hospital used for the same reason. I did note that Lowe's install in our area was 130. When we went to Home depot we found out the install was only 69 dollars so we are like score! But now we have to do a 3rd party installer ... they charge 130 but we get back our 69 dollars so that was nice.

We found out the 130 would only cover a "simple" install and anything above and beyond that we would have to pay him extra for... like say drilling holes into granite. Ha!

If this 130 guy gives us grief, I will definitely check out Lowes.

To anyone reading this thread and think I'm crazy for spending so much on a microwave. I hear you! I think I'm crazy too... I think this whole thing is crazy. I'm really sad that it's costing me an arm and a leg to get this replace because my mom did something dumb.

We have a very small place and there is no space for an on the counter microwave at the moment. If/when this new microwave breaks we might consider making room for an on the counter and turn this into a hood but at this point in our life we just can't make that happen.

We also feel we need a microwave right now but clearly I have been living without one for almost a week. Maybe in the far future we can live without one but right now it's not what we want.

Hm.. never knew that running a microwave empty could bust it! the more you know! (ps - i'm pretty sure my mom would do something similar if she was trying to set the timer on a microwave )

Wow this is crazy. I wonder how your mom didn't realize that the microwave was running? Unless your microwave was supper quiet or something.

If it were me, I think I would get an on the counter microwave and start saving money to turn the space into a hood, like you said. Either that or I would buy a cheap on the counter microwave for now, and start saving to get the granite done right before getting a new microwave installed.

I just wouldn't want to have to deal with this again when the second microwave breaks. But I'm all about big upfront costs if it saves in the future. Not everyone cares about that though.

@Shizaz: Yeah we talked about this we are going to do the converting to a hood later. Yeah I don't want to go through this again but we will need to at least once more.

@Shizaz: oh the question about my mom not noticing it. She was running the fan which is loud because she was cooking something on the stove along with timing stuff in the oven. I was like didn't you see the light and it turning!?!?? She said she didn't notice that at all. Argh!!!!

Okay people... you won't believe this... the microwave drama continues! The guy that came today was totally prepared to install our microwave. He was willing to put the back part up on the granite....

THE PROBLEM now was the new microwave's anchor hooks are too far forward and can't attach to the cabinets above the microwave!!

*bangs head on table*

There is no way to attach *this* microwave to our cabinets. We have to return this microwave and find another microwave that happened to have anchor holes not more than a specific distances from the back.

We are at square one.

I am seriously going to cry... the installer guy saw how upset I was and tried to comfort me. How terrible am I?!?! He was so nice ... and said it's not a big deal... he knows other families that have gone through worst situations. So sweet.

@Raindrop: argggggh why are microwaves such a PITA?!?? We caved and now have a new one in a kitchen cart as well as a non working one just chilling over the stove for now. So annoying!

We are thinking now since we have to return the microwave and most likely if this happens again it will be a big hassle also... So we are seriously thinking now to replace with a hood... DH is a little mad because we seriously have no where to put a counter top microwave. Argh!!!

@sunny: thanks! I just wish this whole thing wasn't dragging out so much. Such a hassle. I do understand if this is one of my few problems.. then I have a pretty good life. Haha.

Eta: Luckily it looks like we will get all our money back... So there is that.

Have you tried searching your model number online to see if you can order it from somewhere? You might be able to find the discontinued one

@mtler: thanks ... Did that Totally not sold anywhere!!!

I did find out during that search that our model was called spacesaver line (GE profile) ... Which doesn't seem to have an updated model in that line but we got a current GE profile which was suppose to be close to our last model. I feel this spacesaver thing is the reason we are having such troubles.
