Did you try this place? They don't take online orders it seems

@mtler: I saw the first place but I couldn't figure out how to order it! Ha!
Oh the used one sounds promising but it says no tray... Sadly the first install guys took our old microwave away so we can't get the tray out.
Thanks for looking!!
I think this is a sign to go ahead with the hood and figure out it out from there.

Our microwave is currently on top of our dryer. No space either, but I have to have it! Hope you can get this figured out; it sounds so frustrating!

@Torchwood: Funny! Our washer and dryer are kind of in our kitchen... Small place. If you look at the picture I took of where our microwave was... I was pretty much standing in front our washer and dryer aka they were behind me as I was taking the picture. So that might work for us too! Thanks!
I was also thinking we have a drying rack for dishes we can get rid of (use the dish washer for a drying rack instead)... Bam space for a small microwave.

Just updating... Drama!
We will only get back 50% of our last install fee and there is a 15-20% restocking fee for the microwave. Which was to be expected. But there is a weird manager approving thing we have to wait for on Monday to see if we can return the microwave... The lady says it is not a big deal.
Sooooooo there is a little bit of hood drama. All the hood we looked up were about an inch too big to attached to our cabinet. Doh!!
But the Home Depot people were pretty nice they pulled some hoods off the shelf so we could measure them. Yup the screw holes are too far out. But DH noticed that it was just sheet metal and couldn't installers drill through that and make new screw holes that would work for us? Huh... The Home Depot team think that is possible but will need to confirm with their installers and they will get back to us on Monday. Hopefully this will work out. *fingers cross*
We just bought a new counter microwave on Amazon that should come in soon. Score!! Soon a microwave!!!

When we replaced the microwave, I went with a mountable one from Amazon. It's mounted to my cabinets in the corner, and it's pretty convenient. It still gives me some counter space, and I like having the microwave higher up.

@yin: You know since we haven't had the OTR microwave I think the space is great without it. It really opens up our small kitchen. :). Since we have the granite goes so far up it is really made for a hood instead.
Thanks for the suggestion of a mountable microwave!! I actually saw that online and was thinking about that.

Hey everyone. Is this an awkward spot for a microwave??
Is there something about this I am not thinking about? I know we need to keep clear the area in front which I think I can do. I read the user manual and I just need 3 inches on both sides and 2 inches on top for venting which I have. So think this might work.

@avivoca: thanks!! I have refreshing this thread since I wrote it. So excited to plug it in and have a microwave again. Thank you for sticking with me through this!! *hugs*.
*off to plug it in*. Woot woot!

Again just venting. This is now known as the great microwave debacle of 2016 amongst my friends and family. Ha!
The home depot appliance person is so on our side! Talked to both the installers that they offered and even talked to the mangers. Sadly the point is they don't want to alter the unit to install it. Because if the installation fails OR if we decide we don't like the product - we can't return it because they altered it (aka drilled holes in the sheet metal which is what we would need to do to have it fit in our cabinets). Sad!! She said we could hire a handy man or install it ourselves.
DH says we should try other appliance stores first. At least this will give us time to find the "best" hood instead of going with whatever home depot sold. Worst come to worst we might have to enlist some of our stronger friends help (the main part of the install is holding the hood against the cabinet as someone drills the holes) and install it ourselves. I think that's do-able.

@Raindrop: DH installed the hood himself, and it was pretty painless. I had to help lift it up in place while he drilled some holes. So with two people, it can easily be done.

@Raindrop: If it makes you feel better, I held our microwave up in the air so DH could install it himself. Totally doable.
What a mess! I would be so annoyed at whoever decided that was a good place for an extra slab of granite! haha

@yin: @Mrs. Lion: Thanks ladies!! Maybe we can install it with just the two of us!! Hehe.
@Mrs. Lion: I was thinking the exact same thing!! Darn that person that put that granite there!! Haha oh well. I think looking back at this (eventually when we get the hood in) we will laugh at this troublesome tale.

@Raindrop: I've been following this because it's just interesting to me (and terrible) and because we've had our fair share of appliance troubles too.
I think the microwave looks fine there. Microwaves are kind of a waste of space so if you can stuff then in a corner even better! We have a tiny one because it was the only thing that fit in our apartment kitchen and we haven't bothered getting anything bigger yet. It doesn't fit half our dishes or our mugs!
Good luck with your hood! We're going to have to put in a hood eventually too.

@brownepiano: Thanks you!
I'm glad my thread is interesting! I am just glad I have a place to vent about this.

@Raindrop: Maybe I should have started a thread about my washer that restarts itself! Appliances are a necessary nuisance.

Yay we were able to return the microwave with no restocking fee!
Story....
When we found out we needed to return the OTR microwave we called customer service they said oh there is a 10-20% restocking fee and you need to talk to appliances department. We talked to them and it turned out we needed manger approve to return the microwave so we had to wait.
Our OTR microwave is huge. So they told me I was approved to return it a few days later I had to wait for DH to come home because he has a hatchback car. We went to home depot at 7pm. Hauled our huge microwave in.
Then when we went to returns.... The guy looked at me and said oh this is an online order? Well it was ordered online when we were here and shipped to our house along with the first installers. He said oh returning online orders is special because the warehouse on the east coast needs to be open and tell us what the restocking fee is... which is only open on our time from 7am to 3pm. So you would need to return it on a weekday between those times but we are only open at 8am.
At this point I think he could see the raging anger burning in my eyes. I didn't say anything back really.
He looked kind of scared and said "I could call my manager to confirm"
I said "okay" - afterwards DH said he was really scared and thought I was going to explode (btw I'm generally a nice person - or at least I think I am. Haha)
He called his manager and manager knew our case and said we could return it. I think we were the talk of all home depot at this point of our story. Haha.
Anyways we were able to return it then and there and it turns out we have no restocking fee. Yay.
We ended up walking around home depot for a bit and talked to a very nice tools guy that explained what we would need to do to drill through sheet metal. Very helpful.
We are still waiting for a partial refund on our second install fail.
Today we are going to shop around for hoods.

Great microwave debacle of 2016 is OVER!
We installed the hood range last night. It was quite troublesome.
When we got the hood on Sunday we were planning to install it that night... but we read the directions and doh! We had to do some electrical wiring but all we had was a plug for the microwave. We watched some videos and there is a thing called a plug pigtail which is a plug that looks like 3 wires come out and you can connect them. Anyways went to Lowes the next day (Monday) to get it. The Lowes guy said they didn’t have it but lead me to the plugs area. In that area I found a dishwasher / disposal power supply kit. It looked like exactly what we needed! 10 bucks. Got it. It was pretty late so we decided to not do anything on Monday night.
Yesterday night we started to put the hood up at 9:30 pm. We normally go to bed at midnight. For some reason we thought it wouldn’t take more than an hour or so. Boy were we wrong!
First we did some measurements and it looked like the plug outlet would not magically be where our microwave plug outlet hole was, instead it would be in a super awkward spot. I suggested we just drill a well leading up to the spot where we need … basically a well to the new spot which actually took quite a bit of work because all I had was a large drill bit to drill a well for the cable that took a while. DH worked on preparing the hood. I finished the well and I helped DH. We actually were able to put it together with no issues (you have to follow steps to make it fit different types of situations). Also the dishwasher power supply kit was perfect for it.
We propped it up to our cabinet and found out my well was not big enough so I had to drill some more but also we figured out that the vent attachment didn’t look like it was going to fit with our vent!! We took out the bottom piece to our vent and tried to attach it to the vent on the hood. Our vent was somehow warped but we forced it in and it worked out but there are some pins in our vent that didn’t let it connect to the other vent completely by about 2 inches. This was troubles too because when we pushed the hood on there was a moment we didn’t think we could attach it since the hood didn’t seem to go flush with our cabinet because the vent seemed too long now. Luckily I was able to twist the other part of the vent system to get it to work.
Finally we put boxes to hold up our hood. When we finally put the hood up it actually looked like we didn’t have to drill new holes into the sheet metal… sadly b/c of our vent issue and the plug issue would couldn’t put the four screws in first and hook the hood on… we would have to prop the hood up and just drill in the screws from the bottom.
Anyways we got that going and it we ran into troubles with trying to screw in the screws!! They were just too deep for our screwdriver to reach. I actually knew this might be an issue because when I watched install videos they suggest getting a longer screw driver but I didn’t think about it because the original hood we were going to get didn’t look like that would be an issue and then I forgot to mention it when we got this hood. It was impossible to screw in the screws with our short drill bit and we took out all the manual screwdrivers we could find… nope. This was at 12:30 am at this point.
Lucky for us we have a 24 hour Walmart nearby! We went there got a longer screw drive attachment for our drill (3 dollars) went home and drilled in those 4 screws and BAM we were done. We cleaned up and called it a night. Went to bed at 2 am.
Breakdown of the hood installing troubles
Power supply electrical wiring – this was easy but we had to find that power supply kit for dishwashers.
Power supply outlet area in awkward spot (probably our dumb cabinets)
Vent didn’t seem to hook in right.
Vent wouldn’t hook all the way, had to twist the rest of the vent system to get it to fit
Couldn’t screw in the mounting screws with short screw driver – had to go to 24 hour Walmart at 12:30 am to get longer screw driver.
Oh yeah it was a pain in the butt to lift this hood with just the two of us… we rigged a weird system of cardboard boxes to help us keep it lifted while we put in the mounting screws.
So tried but it’s over, it’s done. Here’s a picture!
