DH's mom is gifting me family pictures for my birthday and I was looking for an affordable photographer. I contacted a photographer we used before but their prices have gone up ($500 for 1.5 hour session ouch).
Please recommend your wonderful yet affordable photographer.

My wedding photographer sometimes does special packages for family photoshoots. I'm looking forward to doing a photoshoot in the fall.

@bunnylove08: I'm finding that's the average for great NYC photographers. But looking forward to seeing if anyone has found a diamond in the rough! 
I LOVE Brookelyn Photography used by many bees. But she is that price. 
Although you do get quite a bit in her package.
P.S. I desperately wanted people to gift me family photos for my birthday. But my husband said I couldn't ask for money. My plan was to take the "gift money" and hopefully it covered most if not half of the photos then cover the rest ourselves. If I'm doing pictures I'm not settling! Is that an option for you?

I used the photographer Marc Goldberg, located in Park Slope. His rate is $350, but he was running a special at the time for, I think, $150.

Maybe you can ask for a gift certificate to your favorite photographer. Would your husband be opposed to that?

Check Craigslist too for anyone newer to the business or maybe looking to expand their portfolio. I found our engagement pics turn wedding photographer that way!

There have been a lot of threads about this and I still haven't found one! I even contacted the photographer that several NYC blogging bees used as their wedding photographer and she totally flaked on getting back to me with her pricing.
I've pretty much decided to forego professional photography and just ask my friend who owns a really nice camera/lens to take the pictures for me for both maternity and newborn shoots. I can't justify spending over $500-$600 for one photo shoot where I'm probably only going to choose a 3-4 pictures to display.

@bunnylove08: Honestly, the more I thought about it the more I realized I felt silly paying so much for something I could do myself. I know the pictures won't be nearly as nice, but with a little effort I can do a great photo shoot too! It's not like wedding photography where you really need someone else who is a professional in charge. I mean of course it's nice if you have the money to get awesome pics and not worry about it, but I didn't think it was the right decision for me.
