My office did a small baby shower (lunch out followed by cake plus they purchased my family a gift membership to the zoo) when I had DS who is my second child; they did nothing with my first because office policy at that time was no celebrations. Now they are having a similar baby shower for another person who is also having their second child. I don't really want to participate but feel obligated. What would you do?

My office does things like this - baby showers and the like. But no one feels as obligated if they're not on the same team. While there are about 100 of us on the floor, each of us are in teams of 25-ish and managed separately. Although I know a few here and there from the other teams, I would probably only attend a shower for someone on my team because I see them every day.
But in your situation, yes I would participate.

Personally I would participate because I would feel obligated and I'm just not one to go against the grain.

@purrpletulips: if that person was at yours then you definitely should. I think it would be rude and ungrateful not to.

Is it a small office? My office is 6 people total, so there is no getting out of it. If it won't cost you a lot, I would probably just participate.

Compromise? I'll skip the lunch but participate in the cake part which is back at the office.

I think that is a fair compromise @purpletulips - I don't think its a big deal to say you're going to stay back and eat your own lunch. maybe say you need to run an errand during the lunch time?

I'd do my best to participate unless there was a good reason why I couldn't.

@purrpletulips: honestly, I would just suck it up and go. It's a fun celebration and I'm sure she will really appreciate your presence. It's one meal; I'm sure you can find something to eat.
