A friend mentioned that her doctor said no pedicures during pregnancy, especially the last trimester, because the foot massage portion can cause contractions. Has anyone else received this same advice? Have you continued to get pedicures, foot massage included, during your pregnancy?

No, but I might have to go for a pedicure today if that's the case!!
Seriously, though. I had read about getting infections from pedicures and that was a reason not to get one. My OB never said don't get a massage, pedicure, etc.

I never asked but I got pedicures throughout my entire pregnancy.

I've never heard that. I've had two or three pedicures during my pregnancy - I need another one now actually since there is no way I"m reaching my toes to paint them myself at this point...

My doc hasn't said anything about not getting them. I know that there are pressure points on the foot which can help induce labor (my colleague's wife was past her due date so he gave her a foot massage focusing on those pressure and she delivered within 24hr). I was taking a prenatal yoga class and during one we were talking about massage and were advised to be very careful when massaging the feet for the same reason; however the instructor said that if you wanted to go into labor then go get a pedicure at a place that doesn't know much about pregnancy because they might end up bringing on labor.
As for the risk of infection, I've read that it is best to go first thing in the morning because the tubs should be the cleanest at that point and to avoid pedicures if you have any broken skin on your foot. I have a friend who used to be a nail tech at a salon but now does it from her home and plan to have at least one pedicure during this pregnancy.

The foot does have labor inducing areas (I got acupuncture and went into labor a few hours later). I got a pedicure at 36 weeks and skipped the massage. Don't like people rubbing my legs anyway

My doc told me that she didn't want me going to get a mani or a pedi during the first trimester. She also said that she would only be okay with it during the second and third if it was an open air one that didn't retain the smell of the chemicals (which is almost impossible to find in Texas during the summer). I asked her if ae was okay with my going during my 39 week check up and she said yes...I was nervous but the place made sure my water was lukewarm and they didn't message my feet or ankles at all, just my legs.
During our birthing class the instructor said that even though we have those pressure points, they have to be massaged to the point of almost bringing pain in order to possibly start labor. I never asked my doc though so I can confirm if that is true.
ETA: I also used formaldehyde free nail polish.

@mediagirl: Haha, I thought the same thing- I'm due Sunday, so maybe I should get a pedi on Saturday? I got a prenatal massage last Saturday and no contractions, so I don't have a lot faith that it will happen for me, but hey, it couldn't hurt!

I got pedicures every few weeks during my pregnancy. I went to a nicer salon that is known for their high degree of sterilization and used formaldehyde free nail polish.

I've had a pedicure once a month since 12 weeks and I'm doing just fine
I have no plans to stop, either!

I asked my doctor, and she said that yes there are points in the foot that trigger contractions but this should not stop me from getting a pedicure and relief from achy feet! I have gotten them throughout my pregnancy (22 1/2 weeks) and had no issues. If anything, just ask them to not massage the arch of your foot.

my OB said it was totally fine - my feet were so swollen, my bi-weekly pedicures made me still feel human at the very end there

I didn't get pedicures, the smell gives me migraines. But I did get full body massages, which obviously includes feet.

I plan to have a few pedicures before my due date (early September). The salon I like has decent ventilation and great sterilization, so I don't worry about infections or any other complications.

Pedicures are among the few luxuries I have now that I can't splurge on desserts with my GD diet!!! I have probably gotten four or five already this pregnancy. Plan on getting many more since I can't reach my toes. I only go to nice, large salons with good ventilation and sterilization. More expensive than the little places, but worth the extra few bucks for the peace of mind.

My doctor takes issue with the fumes more so than the massage part. He doesn't wholeheartedly support them, but he's not against them, so I'm not quitting them. They are one of my favorite things, massage and all.

A friend of mine is 39 weeks pregnant and we went to get a pedicure this past weekend. No contractions or impending labor for her yet!

I got one during my 1st trimester before I knew I was pregnant and another one around 38 weeks. You can always ask them to skip the massage if you're worried about triggering labor. At 38 weeks I was happy for them to massage away, since the baby was technically full term, and I was ready for her to come out!

I had a similar post this weekend because I got a pedicure AND a neck/shoulder massage. I asked my doctor about it yesterday and she said both are fine, but she did say if you get a pedicure in the 3rd trimester, just ask them to skip or alter the massage.

I had read about the possibility of pedicures (the massage portion) and contractions but had not yet asked my OB about it. From what I can tell, there is a pressure point on the back of the heel area that may bring on contractions when massaged the "right" way.
I don't know if I'll be able to stay away from pedicures this summer... also, as I get closer to November, I will want my toes to look pretty for when labor and delivery arrive!

My doctor didn't tell me that, but I do feel like I read it somewhere. I got pedicures my entire pregnancy and was okay. I actually know someone who is currently pregnant and her husband gives her foot rubs every night!

There is a technique that may cause them but if you let them know you are pregnant they probably won't use it. I had pedicures my whole pregnancy without a problem. They felt wonderful on swollen feet! : )

NeNever heard of this. I got pedicures all the time!!!! And I definitely did not halve my baby early.

I got pedicures through out both my pregnancies with no problem at all.
With the swelling in both my legs it was such a relief to have them massaged.
I've been pregnant twice in the past 10 years and I have to say things are a lot more "This is bad" than it was before. I'll do what my OB wants when we get pregnant again but I'm also going to use my own judgement. I don't give in to the whole "You can't do X Y Z" for everything though. -
