I usually buy the cheap drugstore brand pantyhouse for work, but find it rips or gets runs really easily. Is it just because I'm buying cheap stuff? I bought an expensive pair (I think Donna Karan) once, and while it seemed thicker, it tore as well. If anyone has any recommendations for brands, I'd appreciate it!

For hose, I like Hanes Silk Reflections.
Hose is more sheer than tights.

Tights, yes. Pantyhose, they all seem to run after a few weddings so I wouldn't pay more. When I got pricey hose, I think I maybe got 1-2 extra wears out of it and it cost practically double the drugstore kind.

@plantains: lol I didn't know wearing pantyhose was still a thing. I thought you could only buy them at drugstores. Shows how much i know!
H&m holds up fairly well for the price but express seriously holds up for whole seasons/into the next. But they are thicker. I live in the northeast so there's never really a reason for in between of bare legs and tights.

I rarely wear pantyhose, I mostly wear tights. The ones from Victoria's Secret are nice, but pricey. They always last me a while though. Other than that, in not loyal to any specific brand.
For cheap, but decent quality tights I like Target ones. $5 a pair.

For pantyhose with closed toed shoes the trick is to buy reinforced toe and control top. The hose with those features last longer by far. I don't think it matters as to the brand. I buy them from onehanesplace in packs of 6, but you can buy them at the drugstore. I usually only have to buy a few packs to last me a year. You can either handwash or machine wash in a delicate bag. I actually throw them out from discoloration more than runs.
I used to buy the sheertoe and they would always run within a wear or two. A collegue told me about the reinforced toe/control top thing once and it changed my life and has saved me so much money.

Pricey hose aren't much more durable but they are SO much more comfortable. I used to buy them at Loehman's/Filene's but don't live near one now. I miss having access to marked down versions. If I had to wear hose every day I would definitely splurge on the comfy ones.

I'm not sure if you have them in the US yet? But I looooooooooove Joe Fresh tights AND pantyhose. They're so inexpensive but SOOOO amazing. I literally have Joe Fresh tights that i've owned for 3 years or more maybe. And they're super comfortable. I even buy the little sockette hose from there cuz they're like $3 for 12 and they last a long time too!

I swear by Hue. I buy a few pairs whenever Bloomingdales has their F&F sale in the fall (just happened last week) and they last me all winter.

I wear hose everyday for work, I have tried just about every brand out there, cheap and expensive. And my favorites that last me the longest are L'eggs Sheer Energy. They have a nice thickness about them and a sheer look.

@hotchildinthecity: they have great colours and patterns! and they're nice and thick and i seriously have neeeeeeever gotten a run in them or anything. i only throw them out because they get too small! cuz i gain weight, not because they shrink haha. and they are like $4 or something so totally worth it.

@Hoots: this. The reinforced toe is key. I've had good luck with ASOS hose because even at 16 den. the toe is nicely reinforced.

@sweetpea612: I find great deals on designed hose at TJMaxx and Marshalls. Last weekend I bought a few pairs of DKNY and Via Spiga hose (reinforced toe, control top) for $5.99/ea.
Another trick is to always hand wash and lay flat to dry. -
