DH's alumni association holds a family picnic in Central Park each August. They provide awesome italian meats, fresh mozzarella and bread. They ask others attending to bring a dish and drink. It tends to be very hot outside and it's hard to keep perishable dishes cold. I brought a dip one year and a pasta salad last year. I'm trying to find something new to bring (not a dessert since we usually have too much of that) that can withstand the heat. Anything left over usually gets divided up among who's left and brought home. If it's perishable, it gets tossed. The dip went over well but there's the issue of having to serve it somehow (scoop onto plates, eat out of bowl, etc.). I'd like something handheld - that you can grab and take with or eat. I thought of fruit on skewers but it might be a bit labor intensive.
So - ideas! Needs to withstand heat so ideally not mayo/dairy based and can be brought and served as-is!
