@loveisstrange: That is amazing! Wizard of Oz is my absolute favorite. I was just telling Dan that we need to let her watch it before she gets old enough to realize that the witch and monkeys are scary.

I try to turn it on only when I'm desperate. Which is usually when I'm trying to make dinner on DH's late nights. TBH these days it only holds her attention for 10-15 minutes max. Just enough to get the dangerous part of cooking done! LOL

She likes the Baby Genius DVDs which are children songs and Daniel Tiger.

Most weekdays we're too busy to even have any TV time, but right before bed and on weekends he watches a little TV sometimes. He's only recently started to be interested at all.

He could watch the first 3 minutes of Rio on repeat all day though. "birds, birds, birds" "momma, birds". That song gets stuck in my head all night.

I usually turn it on for him when I'm trying to fix dinner (otherwise he's yanking on my legs or trying to climb into the cat box). He'll watch the Elmo's Potty Time video, another SS episode (or part of one), Daniel Tiger or Dinosaur Train. He loves the Potty Time video, though. The others he'll get up and wander away after a few minutes but if Potty Time is on he'll sit and happily drink a bottle of milk and watch.

I probably put it on for him twice a day, in the morning when I'm getting breakfast ready and in the evening when I'm getting dinner together. And sometimes randomly in the afternoon when I just need a break.

@pinkcupcake: @autumnlove: lol, pretty sure this is going to be our house. But I have a feeling it will be more baseball and college basketball than anything. I also have a friend whose baby wouldn't calm down unless they put on hockey. He loved watching the players zoom by!

The tv is on, most of the time. I will have Disney jr or Disney on. He really only watched when it's doc mcstuffins and Sofia the first. Or music.

I did not especially at that age, but by about 18 months she was watching an episode of Curious George some days. I needed it when she started wanting to talk to me every waking second - which EXHAUSTED me as an introvert. Right now we're watching Sesame Street (one per day) and I'm chilling out.

I've also been letting her watch a little more lately because I've really ramped up my exercise. If we come in from biking for 15 miles, I for sure cannot jump into actively playing with her, so I just put on a Curious George or some Adventure Time. I wish that wasn't the case, but I figure that having me be really fit and healthy is worth a little more tv.

Not having it on all the time is a ground rule, in our house. I would worry about that impacting her ability to entertain herself with imaginative play.

E watches probably 30-60 minutes of tv a day at 18 months (okay, except on Sunday when DH has football on). B use to watch more but his behavior started to change around 2-3 with too much screen time. I mean, there was a huge difference when he would go a week without tv. Instead, he had more independent play and started liking play dough and art.

@mrskc: That's hilarious about Conan. Mine is oddly entranced by "The Blacklist", which is so inappropriate for children.

Mine's only 4 months, so I never even really considered it giving *her* screentime when the TV's on, but we have a teeny apartment, so if anybody's watching you can pretty much see the TV from anywhere in the house.

We try to use it as a last resort when nothing else gets her to stop crying or to eat her meals. We put together a YouTube playlist of Sesame Street songs and she loves it. Her fave is Cookie Monster singing "Share it Maybe" (aka Call me maybe)

Just like lovehoneybee I need dvds tobbabysit my son or I won't be able to eat my own breakfast or wash dishes or the like sometimes. We love elmo baby signing time yo gabba abd baby einstein. I think the biggest drawbacks occur when people use tv to compensate for independent play and interactive play. I make sure that Tor and I go on walks, play with blocks or explore new ideas. He has puzzles and I show him new ways to play. I think it's just important to make sure our kids are not learning everything from staring at a screen. I'd say DVDs

My 19 month old watches some TV every day. Usually Doc McStuffins or Sesame Street. She's also really into iPad games, so we have some educational ones for her like Endless Alphabet. I don't count- some days she has no screen time, other days it could be an hour or two added up over the course of the day. She's been able to identify and say all the letters in the alphabet for a few months now, counts to 10, counts items correctly, knows her colors, listens to and follows complex directions, and talks up a storm. I know for a fact that some of that educational screen time has helped her learn these things, so I'm all for it!

Ummmm. DS is 4 months and when I tell DH to watch him so I can take care of some stuff (laundry, go shower, etc.) he puts DS on his lap and they both watch football!!! DS doesn't understand TV but the changing bright lights no the TV definitely capture his attention. When we nurse in the living room and DH turns on the tv, DS will stop nursing and crank his neck to see the TV!!!! *Face palm*

I'm not against it, but he's only 4 months old. I didn't want to start THAT early....

He usually gets an episode a day while I try to make dinner. More if we are traveling. He is obsessed with bubble guppies, also likes yo gabba and Daniel tiger!

Yep, she watches, mostly Disney Jr, Sesame Street and Bubble Guppies. I have no problem with it and she's perfectly fine at age 2. The only behavior problem I have seen has come from the kids at daycare. She copies everything some of them do!

@erinpye: That's why I don't have a problem with it, they do learn depending on what it is they watch or use.

DD loves the Katy Perry roar video! I let her watch it on my tablet phone when she has teething pain. I tell her about all the animals and she knows them from the zoo.

We have PBS on in the mornings during breakfast and getting ready for the day and when I'm cooking dinner in the late afternoon/evening. We also have sports on in the weekends/evenings- he's a hockey nut! Most of the time he watches a few minutes here and there in between playing, but doesn't pay much attention otherwise. If he ever starts acting out or being a couch zombie then we'll re-evaluate.

@Greentea: Yes- my son too, every time the song comes on he says Roar about every 5 seconds!! We were driving with my MIL and he starts saying roar, she couldn't figure out why he was saying it until I turned up the radio and explained that it is his song
