We have had this kind of rating system for years. Typically, i give myself 4s and 5s. When i was newer my manger may have given me a 3 and we would discuss what she felt i needed to do to earn a 4 of 5. As i improved and became more seasoned my self evils were right on target. Does your system allow you to justify your rating? Also, one thing to note my manager shared that in our company she wasn't allowed to give everyone a good rating of 4 or 5. She was required to spread the 2s and 3s. This tidbit of info also led me to believe some of my self evaluation ratings were correct, but her hands were tied. I find being honest about your strengths and weaknesses is refreshing in business. Companies function very well with 3s by the way.

We used to have the same rating scale as well. I gave myself a bunch of 3's because I didn't want to rate myself too high like I was a rockstar, but when I bumped my eval against my manager's, they gave me all 4's and 5's! So if I were you, I'd stick with 4's and 5's unless there's a particular area you feel like you need to work more on.

Does this eval affect your salary (bonus or increase?), if so, even more reason to bump your rating up. There's plenty of people out there that rate themselves as rockstars, and if your company is like my old one, they dish out bonuses based on rating so the highest rated person gets a bigger portion vs a person that does average (aka scored mainly 3's, etc.).

We have to do them every year. 3's are considered good here. I answer honestly and give justifications. I don't tend to give myself goals I cannot make, though. And the ones i can't make are due to things outside my control, and I explain them. I'm usually pretty spot on to what my manager gives me. I think it looks really inflated to give yourself the best score on almost everything, though!
