If you live far from family, how do you keep in touch with them? We're big phone people, but I'm thinking I'd also like to find a way to share pictures and videos of little one when he or she comes. I'd rather avoid Facebook, though.
What do you do?

Blog with Blogger. I started it when DS was 7 months old and we moved to PA (he is 5.5 now) .
My family loves it!
Plus I print them out and have kind of a journal of our entire year

Blog - I use Wordpress. It's REALLY picture heavy, but includes some narrative so my family can know what she's up to. I have a link in my profile if you want to see. It's probably pretty boring to most people, but my family (and select close friends) soaks it up.
I go back and forth on wanting to make it private, but I have too many older family members that use it, and if I made it private I know they wouldn't sign up and log in each time to see the pictures

We do a lot of FaceTime with grandparents and a couple of her aunts, but mostly we text photos of her to family. I'm not super comfortable posting photos of her online.

I have a tumblr blog for him and I use https://ifttt.com/ to share the posts. Before he was born, I asked friends and family if they wanted to get the emails and how often. During his first year, I posted a new picture every day, but now I post a few at once about once a week. People love it!

I post a ton of pictures and short video on Instagram. And then select ones on facebook. It's pretty much only family, close friends, and HB people on my Instagram so I don't think they would get totally sick of all the pictures of her like FB friends would.

@mrs. tictactoe: what is iffft.com? I went to the site, but I don't quite understand...

Our family uses a group chat on Whatsapp! My sister in law (with the babies) lives in a different country.

i send a weekly email to family members with pictures. i don't have facebook, and am generally technologically behind when it comes to all the cool apps out there.
i think one of my friends uses smugmug, which requires a password so that's fairly private.

We have an iCloud photo stream set up for all Apple users.. I like it because I know the people in the group want to see pics so I don't have to overload my Facebook page

I don't have a LO yet, so I don't know what I'll do, but a good friend just created a private group on Facebook for family and close friends who want to keep up with the kids.
I thought that was a nice compromise to keep the ease of Facebook but make it a little more protected.

We share photo albums on Picasa and YouTube videos on a private YouTube channel.

I upgraded my Shutterfly to do unlimited video and created a share site. If I add people as members they get a weekly digest of updates emailed. It's mostly private and I can password protect it if I wanted.

Well my son is a week old today, and I have a lot of friends who already have kids so I have posted the initial series of photos on FB because people are interested (or so they say, at least).
My parents don't use FB, and anyway in the long run I don't really want to spam everyone with kid photos on FB. So I just built a Picasa album and will start archiving everything there. In the long run I will probably put more photos there than I do on FB.
ETA: You could also set up a group on FB and only post the photos to that select group of FB friends.

I used to use Shutterfly and load pics on there for everyone but it took so much time! Now I do monthly email updates listing what we did, what she loves, what she can do and her health and one or two pictures. I can't really Skype because of the time difference and by the time we get home they're in bed so email works best for us.

Mainly email or text pictures. Once in awhile, we'll FaceTime, but texting is the easiest and quickest. On the spot right after the picture is taken, bam! Sent!

We have a picasa album. I have family receive auto updates every time I add pictures and for friends I send the link only if they ask to see pictures.
ETA: we also Skype once a week.

Face time and email, but lately I've been utilizing google + more. I have it set up so it automatically backs up pictures and videos from my phone and computer, and then sharing those privately is really easy and convenient.

We FB and during the holidays we send a holiday card with pictures of LO on it

I do Facebook, but only a select group of family & close friends can see the pics and videos I post.

For LO's first year I texted a daily picture to immediate family. I still text one everyday to my mom but a little less to everyone else. We also do FaceTime a lot.

We have a private, only family-accessible FB album, a private Shutterfly share site, a private YouTube channel, and I email and text some photos and videos as well.

We have a private Shutterfly share site with strict permissions since my MIL is notorious for lifting pics without permission. Occasionally, I email pics to my dad if there's a cute pic. I keep very few pics of LO on FB.

FaceTime.
I use a private photo hosting site, but my dad is too techtarded to figure it out. So I email him photos from time to time.

@Andrea: we do exactly this!
I sent a picasa album once a week for the first year or so and now do every 1-2 weeks. Keeps me organized too, which made it easy to make photo books later.
Videos we do a couple a month when we can catch something cute. I've later made those into DVDs for each year which was fun too.

We set up a Dropbox account where we share all of our photos with our immediate family and close friends.

We don't have a little one yet but we set up a flickr page and bought the domain name the[ourlastname].com i hate facebook and this makes it easy for everyone to access.

I'd use Facebook, but you could also make a shared folder on Google Drive to put pics in.

@LovelyPlum: if this, then that. So if I post to tumblr, then it automatically emails people the post. You create "recipes" for what you want to happen.

We text or e-mail pictures. I've only posted 1 photo of LO on Facebook.

If everyone has iPhones you can create an album to share and people can "like" & comment on your pictures!

We mostly text pics to our families, but I also post to facebook. I sent out way more stuff by text than facebook - I figure my parents might want to see 5 pictures of D in one day, but probably the rest of my news feed doesn't.
