This is ours and I need some inspiration. I would also love a link to any good lighted (battery?!) garland!

Following BC I need inspiration too! I am planning to get plug in lighted garland and be extra careful with the toddler.

@anonysquire: cute. We have long knit stockings too but not sure I trust hanging them on the mantle by the fire and the toddler.

@T.H.O.U.: ya... shortly after the pic was snapped, the command hook broke. So I need a new idea. It sucks not having an actual mantle or anything.

@T.H.O.U.: Did you make a padded cover for the bottom of your fireplace? It looks really neat! I could have used that when we lived in the U.S.! Wish I have a fireplace to show! Have to figure out where to hang our stockings this year...

This year, ours is random red crap from other parts of the house. A red mirror, red doily stretcher, red nesting dolls, a red Valentine's Day candy box.

@yoursilverlining: oh hmmm... I was wondering if I could still do a garland with a TV... I guess I could fit it in? Where is yours from?
eggplant / 11824 posts
@travellingbee: I love the way the garland looks with a tv, personally!! We have what looks like about the same amount of space under our TV to our mantel so I'm sure you could do one too - you just want to make sure that any garland is clear from in front of the power button on the TV so you don't drive yourself mad trying to use the remote and not getting through the garland
I got that garland at Home Depot a couple of years ago, it's a Martha Stewart one. It's held up really well and looks really good in person.

@travellingbee: bad pic but we have garland too! I bought the cheap stuff and then some lights mixed in. Then stuck some ornaments in it.
wonderful cherry / 21504 posts
@yoursilverlining: I think ours is going to look really similar. The TV is close to the mantle so good call on clearing any remote paths! I think I'll get the Costco garland shopaholic posted in her mantle pic.

Just got ours set up tonight. It's 9 feet long so I had to make the garland.
wonderful clementine / 24134 posts
@kiddosc: about how many ornaments per foot did you use/need?
wonderful clementine / 24134 posts
@erwoo: yes we made it! You can see parts where the fabric isn't super tight anymore but it's 3 yrs old.

I got about 64 inches out of 120 ornaments. I bought packs of 41 for $9 at walmart in three colors. I needed six packs, but I think a standard length mantle would only take three. So you could do it for $30. Or I saw on pinterest that some people had gotten packs of 12 ornaments for a dollar at the dollar store. I don't know what size those ones would be though.

@kiddosc: You now need to post instructions on YOUR pinterest on IG that's incredible

It's simple, attach a washer to floral wire or ribbon (I used wire). String on ornaments. Attach washer at end. I slipped the washers over nails and used some picture hanging wire wrapped around a nail and the garland wire to make the swags. Voila!
pomegranate / 3105 posts
@kiddosc: COOL! So they just kind of fall into place...I wasn't sure if you had to do like 4-5 wires and twist them around each other. Looks gorgeous
grapefruit / 4278 posts
@babycanuck: nope they just settle into place. I wouldn't try a pattern, they would all just jumble.

@kiddosc: Super cute! I would be too worried about it falling and breaking
grapefruit / 4278 posts
@LindsayInNY: They're plastic shatter proof ornaments. Some might break, but it wouldn't be catastrophic.
@yoursilverlining: Thank you!

@kiddosc: love it!
Mine doesn't photograph well, but it's a bay leaf garland, two electic candles, and a few lanterns/pine cones/etc.
I need to get new stockings for SH and the dog to match mine and LOs.

Just did ours last night! Got a new battery powered lighted garland at Home Depot, so I was excited!

I'm loving our new garland and the fact that we have a proper fireplace and mantel now!
We only moved in four weeks ago so you'll have to excuse the paint swatches on the wall, the remnants of the wallpaper on the walls either side, and the mounted tv without the built in bookshelves having yet been installed. You get the idea though...

@Mrs. Oatmeal: very cool fireplace! What above the mantel??

Here's ours! Our fireplace is in the kitchen so it's a little different. I got this faux candle garland thing at costco a few years ago and I love it.

@regberadaisy: thanks! It's a painting we found at Bombay- we love it.

We don't have mantle but we do have a window sill near our tree. It's a tiny step up from our old apartment.
Maybe I'll post a picture.
I'm so jealous of all of your beautiful mantles!

@travellingbee: how did you hang your stockings? I am looking for weighted holders but am worried about my toddler yanking on the stocking and the holder crashing down on his head.
