I know that there are a bunch of us here whose parents immigrated to America at some point, so that makes us second generation Americans (I think?). Some of my older friends (in their late 30s or early 40s now) consider themselves 1.5 generation since they were born in their parents' home country, immigrated here as children, and they speak both languages fluently.
Anyway, I was wondering how much you identify with your parents' culture vs. American culture. Growing up, my parents never forced us to speak Korean or eat Korean food (I was the kid with the Happy Meal in the Korean or Japanese restaurant) so as a result, I speak VERY little Korean and I prefer American food. I also don't watch Korean tv, listen to Korean music, or follow Korean celebrities. I've never even visited Korea (or anywhere in Asia, for that matter!) and I have no plans to in the near future. Wagon Sr. wants to take our kids to Korea so they can see the motherland of our parents, so maybe someday when they're older we'll all take a trip together. That will be mommy's first time in Korea as well...!! (Wagon Sr. has been there once, during college, but he grew up a bit more "Korean-ized" than me.) I think since all four of us happen to have turned out 100% Korean in ethnicity, we should probably do that trip at some point when we can all appreciate it.
So I think I would say I identify with America probably 95% and Korea 5%.
which was 23!
& growing up I watched a few of my own, hehe.
