If I wasn't speeding I'd probably try to fight it. But for my one and only speeding ticket I was going 35 in a 25, so they had every right to give it to me. I don't think I've sped since because I get so freaked out I'll get in trouble for it.
hostess / wonderful honeydew / 32460 posts
@artbee: So stupid. The HWY I was on is 45mph. I was going 52.
There's a 6 block area where speeds drop to 35. Cop says he clocked me going 52 on that stretch of highway.

I have never had a speeding ticket - I drive like an old lady!
If I was speeding I would probably just take it on the chin as I deserved it!
@chopsuey119: flashing lights??!

@cupcakemama: I need to start driving like an old lady.
GOLD / wonderful grape / 20289 posts
@chopsuey119: That's crappy. We used to have those crazy speed drops when I would drive to school (5 hour drive and there were tons of them!) But I'm paranoid about it so I would follow them. And watch all the other cars being pulled over
hostess / wonderful honeydew / 32460 posts
@artbee: I didn't even notice. I was omw to our play date so must have been looking at my navigation when I passed the sign.
hostess / wonderful honeydew / 32460 posts
@venice4504: SO AWESOME. I'm debating whether I should go to court.. Not sure it's worth it since I have a LO..? :T Too bad I can't send DH to fight it for me.
honeydew / 7667 posts
Do you have a reason/facts to fight it? The only other way you will get out is if the officer doesn't show - from experience they show because they get time and a half if the court time is overtime for them.
GOLD / wonderful grape / 20289 posts
@chopsuey119: Personally, I would just pay it. But I hate confrontation so fighting it would be awful for me. I'd rather pay hundreds of dollars then confront someone.
hostess / wonderful honeydew / 32460 posts
@MrsH: I was going slow when he I saw his lights because I was at a red light and it had just turned green..
honeydew / 7667 posts
@chopsuey119: I had that exact scenario happen to me - I paid. On the other hand I have fought driving with an expired license (long story but I had just gotten a new license with my married name and my birthday was a couple of months later and I never got a notice in the mail to renew it - I didn't check my license to see if it expired because I had just gotten it (why wouldn't they have renewed it when I changed my name I have no idea)- they bumped the ticket down to a non-moving violation).
hostess / wonderful honeydew / 32460 posts
@artbee: @MrsH: yeah, I plan on paying it too. The drive to court and having to find someone to sit with LO isn't worth it.
GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22646 posts
I've only gotten 1 and it was last year. I just paid it because I was too lazy to go to court and the cop wrote me up for something that was 0 points anyway. Court would've made me pay a fine anyway so no loss for me.

I've never gotten a speeding ticket, thank goodness. I got pulled over once for my plate sticker but regardless, it's SO scary getting pulled over!

When I got my one and only speeding ticket, everyone told me to fight it no matter what because if you show up they will usually reduce it to $89. When I got there I was so nervous but the cop didn't show and everyone got their tickets reduced to $89... except for one guy who brought all this evidence and fought his case with all this complex stuff (I think he was an aspiring lawyer) and his got reduced to $99. Haha.

I never got a speeding ticket. But stops, yes. I'm too chicken to contest
blogger / watermelon / 14218 posts
oh, and I was speeding because I had gone to a job interview during my lunch break. I got the job! So at least it was worth it.

Dang! All you gals are such responsible drivers.. or lucky!
This is #3 for me.. -.-

I've never been stopped for speeding which makes me want to knock on some wood right now. I have a lead foot, and when I am not stuck behind one of the several drivers around here that love to drive 10 mph below the speed limit, I am normally driving at least 5 above it.

@chopsuey119: it frustrates the heck out of DH ( my driving like an old lady) but what can he say? he he.
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21628 posts
I've gotten one speeding ticket and I just paid it. It was only $85 and I never thought of going to court. I got lucky because not even a year later the speeding ticket prices went up in GA by a lot.

I've gotten one...I totally deserved it too. But since it was my first I went and used my good driver's record so I didn't have to pay. It clears every three years (at least here in RI and MA I believe). My friend used her good driver's record as well. The only thing I had to pay was the court fee. Good luck!

DH just got one, and we paid it b/c then you have an option to do online traffic school and get it removed from your driving record. The clean driving record was worth more to us than the cost of the ticket...

I would fight it, just because doesn't it impact insurance rates or something?

FIGHT IT, FIGHT IT, FIGHT IT!!! I just got my first speeding ticket this summer actually......79 in a 55....don't ask....I was being reckless....but i went to court and "fought it" I really didnt have to do anything, but pretty much since I showed up....instead of it taking like 6 points away, they reduced it to no points (that way my insurance wasn't affected) but I ended up having to pay more (I payed $400 in total) but it was totally worth it because my insurance didn't find out. They changed my speeding ticket actually to "Improper Parking"

My old boss calls them "Driving Awards"
I've gotten a couple photo radar speeding tickets- the plus to that here is if you pay they don't go on your record.
GOLD / cantaloupe / 6703 posts
I've just paid them. I've only gotten 2 and at this point I think that they are both completely off of my record.

I've gotten one, and it was a really messed up situation. I actually was speeding a little (70 on a 65), but when the cop pulled me over he told me that I had been going 80, pretended to exit at X street to try to lose him then got back on and started going 70. I told him that couldn't possibly have been me and that he had mistaken me for someone else. He asked me if I thought he was stupid and called me a liar trying to worm my way out of a ticket. I explained that I had gotten on the freeway two entrances after the one that he said I pretended to exit on. He said, "Okay, I'll just write that you sped from that street on your ticket then." I cried all the way home because he was so mean.
I didn't contest it though because I really just didn't want to see him again. I paid and did online traffic school to keep it off my record.

I'm in NY (upstate) and generally if you plead not guilty and get an appearance date, the district attorney will meet with you and offer you a plea bargain. Usually they'll reduce it some, depending on your record. They are typically more interested in the fines, than the points on your record, so you can usually get a lower offense (fewer or no points) and just pay a bit more. If it's local, it generally seems like it's worth it to at least plead not guilty and show up, rather than just pay through the mail.

I only got a speeding ticket once but it was out of state so I just paid for it. But if it's not too out of the way, I would fight it just to reduce the points. Not sure how long they stay on your record.
hostess / wonderful apple seed / 16729 posts
I guess it depends on the ticket. I have paid ticket without fighting and I did once fight a ticket. I did pay but I got the points taken off.
persimmon / 1396 posts
I have only had one years ago, but my husband and brother get them all the time. They always just hire a lawyer and pay the fine and it doesn't go on their record.
persimmon / 1099 posts
Psht fight it! It will be reduced regardless. Plus if the cop doesn't show up/send a report you get off with no ticket at all. I've fought every single one Ive gotten and they have been reduced or dropped every single time.
honeydew / 7968 posts
ugh. i got 2 speeding tickets and i fought them both. 1 with a lawyer (that was my first, and it was reckless, since anything over 80 in va is reckless) and they reduced it to the minimum. the other one, the cop says he was pacing me. jerk. i contested that i was speeding but not as fast as he said. i should have known i'd lose. ugh.

@chopsuey119: I'm not sure about where you live, but can you take Defensive Driving and have it taken off your record? That's what we do here if you haven't had a ticket in while, so that it stays off your record and your insurance doesn't go up.
