Did you avoid peanuts while pregnant?

I didn't. I had just a little bit but avoided them for the most part. I knew someone who swore that her kids are both highly allergic due to her consumption of nuts while pregnant. Not that it can be proven but I got paranoid. I also avoided them while nursing my older one. But this time, I'm not.

I ate nuts and pb&j all the time. I had actually hadn't ever heard that you shouldn't eat them.

Yes, I ate it almost every day. I love peanut butter.

What? I've never heard of this! I didn't eat them a lot, but didn't make a point of avoiding them.

I had a peanut butter milkshake at least 3 times a week. Probably more.

All the time! (Are you supposed to avoid!?) I have Smart Balance on my toast in the mornings and have mixed nuts as snacks often, too.

LOL! The first time I heard about this whole "avoiding peanuts" thing was when Princess Catherine (ah, Kate) refused something peanuty at an event she was attending. It started the rumor mill. I eat peanut butter without worry! If it's not on my OB's do not eat list, you better believe I'm enjoying it if I want it!

All the time! The thinking now is that exposure helps prevent/minimise allergies.

Yeah, all the time. Seems like eating it would prevent the allergy...but that's just my random thought.

I actually had two pb&j sandwiches before 10am this morning! I am obsessed with them! What is the deal with this craving?!

Pretty much all I was able to eat (and hold down) in the first trimester were peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and oatmeal. My appetite has returned, but I still have peanut butter on toast as part of my breakfast.

I ate pb toast every morning during my 2nd trimester. Then I heard you're supposed to avoid pb so I stopped.

Interesting. I don't eat pb at all (don't like it), but I was just thinking the other day that maybe I should try to eat some once in a while so that LO doesn't end up with an allergy. But you're supposed to avoid them so as not to create allergies? That seems counter-intuitive to me.

@joyjoy: Most of the current thinking is that you shouldn't avoid. Like most pregnancy advice, it's changed over the years. There was a brief period where they said to avoid, but then it seemed to cause an increase in allergies due to lack of exposure, so now they say not to avoid it, but I don't know that it's important enough to intentionally eat something that you wouldn't be eating anyway.

The only reason I've laid off the PB is because of the heart burn that I get about 13 seconds after eating it

PB and crackers is my go-to nighttime snack. It's one of the only things that can keep me full at night so I don't wake up starving.

I had lots of peanut butter with apples and on toast. I normally don't eat peanut butter, so I just went with the cravings while pregnant.
We don't have any family history of allergies, so I felt fine about it.
