Why does it have to be an expensive item though? I think it can be something small. I support push presents and I don't think it has to be something expensive. It is just a thank you for carrying our baby -- it is A LOT OF WORK and WORRY.

I used to think they were a little gift-grabby and something only more wealthy people did (because that was my only experience with them, in real life – diamond earrings, rings, etc.)….but after spending some 18 weeks puking multiple times a day, and now spending what feels like all my free time going between physical therapy, chiropractor and yoga appointments to relieve severe hip/pelvic pain, while still holding down everything else in my life – yeah, I’ll admit that I want a little something shiny for my hard work.

Plus, I don’t really see any difference in giving a mother’s day gift to a woman (giving her a gift for being a mom) and giving a woman a push present (giving her a gift for becoming a mom).

I love the idea and don't think it has to be anything crazy or extravagant, the sentimentality of it should be the most important aspect, in my opinion.

I understand a push present and would be happy to receive but I have a hard time in general with presents that you're 'supposed' to get. I feel like that doesn't make them presents anymore but obligations. For me, I had super baby brain after delivery so it probably wouldn't have been the most effective time for a gift anyways.

Mothers day was about 2 weeks before baby was born (and by that point I thought she was going to be born any minute) and I did expect a mothers day acknowledgment since I'd been carrying the baby so long and was so uncomfy and done with being pregnant. I would have been really hurt if hubby hadn't acknowledged mother's day in some way but he did an outstanding job and made food and sent me and my mom out for a massage, and a massage was best thing at 9 months pregnant.

So maybe I'm a fan of a pre-push present.

I think they are a nice gesture but can get out of hand. I would never expect a gift, especially a super expensive gift, but I think it'd be nice to have a special momento to mark the day.

I don't like the idea of it. First off because the hard work of childbirth isnt just done by the woman. Even though the woman is physically enduring the majority of the pain, its a process that affects both husband and wife as they both go through it together.
And also because often times the push present is expected to be something expensive its rarely ever something cheap. I know childbirth is hard, painful.. etc but what has that got to do with receiving a piece of jewelry or an ipad. In my opinion the baby is the real push present and is the only thing that really truly makes up for the pain and hard work.

I think it's fine for those who want them and want to give them, but I didn't see a need for it. I know my husband appreciated me for carrying our baby and giving birth to her, I didn't need a present. I have my LO, that's more than enough.

After the labor I went through, I was extremely happy to receive my push present and I wear them every single day as a badge of pride over what I went through. Much more beautiful than my stretch marks!! (I got a pair of diamond studs.)

I agree that the push present does NOT have to be something expensive. Although the diamond industry hasn't quite claimed the push present yet (anniversary bands, right hand rings, journey pendants... oh my!) Rob Sr. took the opportunity to give me something he wanted to get me for a wedding gift and couldn't afford at the time, and it makes the present all the more precious.

Like every single other thing, I think it's something each couple should just decide whether or not they're gonna do it. Some couples exchange gifts for every event... I even know a married couple who still goes out on their dating anniversary. Whatever makes you happy!

I like the idea and had mentioned it casually to DH halfway through the pregnancy. I even told him it doesn't have to be pricey - its more the sentiment and thought he put into picking something out rather than just spending money on another piece of jewelry (which I don't wear often). As my due date had neared I knew he hadnt thought about it and I was a little disappointed that he didn't put thought into picking something. I also had quite the labor/delivery (16 hours labor 3 hours pushing with no drugs and then ended up with emergency c-section due to large posterior baby). He tells me he still can't believe I did that and he's still traumatized seeing me in that much pain, but I guess he just doesn't believe in push presents cause nothing yet. =\ kinda stinks. I just wanted some acknowledgement. I sound spoiled don't I? =P

@ElisaT: no you don't! Go out and buy yourself your own present Or go pick one out together. After what you went through, you deserve something to treat yourself, even if it's inexpensive!

Me and DH joke about it, but I feel like I have really been put through the wringer with this pregnancy (hyperemesis, GD, PIH, 3rd trimester spotting etc) and it would be nice if he would give me something in the end to show that he appreciates and understands all I have been through. He does little things now and again (like getting me a Valentine card from Ziggy). I don't think it has to be elaborate or expensive, but something to show he was think of me and appreciates and sympathizes with all I have gone through.

I think they're awesome. Not necessary, but a nice gesture for sure.

I'm ALL for it! Mothers/wives/women are awesome and amazing and we deserve to be pampered and spoiled. Luckily my DH 100% agrees with push presents so now I have to figure out what I want! Yay!

My husband got me a snuggie and brought me a pizza when I had our daughter. I got him a video game for being so supportive throughout the pregnancy. It was more of "celebrating parenthood" moment than a push present I guess.

I don't like the idea. Why not save it for Mother's day? Yes, I gave birth, but he emotionally supported me. Do I get him something for having a stronger swimmer because he got me pregnant?

I'm all for moms being appreciated, but I wouldn't have wanted one. Now Mother's Day I'm all for it.

@prettylizy: that is AMAZING. I would never be able to resist those boxes but what an incredible idea!!!!

@tina: it's killing me, but I know how much it means to him for me to be surprised. Two red cardboard boxes staring me in the face every time I go in that room!! 4 more weeks.... this baby better not be late
