I think they are unnecessary at least in my case. My DH has been wonderful so far. He helped me through the worst days of nausea, rubbed my back when I had aches and pains and couldn't sleep, and did the dishes when I couldn't stand the smells. He is completely involved in this process with me. Rather than having a gift at the end for going through pregnancy and delivery, I think it's just more appropriate for him to be involved and supportive the whole way through. But I don't judge those who get them. Anytime a woman says that her SO gives her a gift to show appreciation, whether a push present or a random gift, it's sweet.
Eta- I don't agree with a woman saying she wants one, though, or it becoming almost a tradition/necessity. I think it should be more like if he feels inclined at that moment, great, if not, there's mothers day!

I'm a fan, but of something more practical or a small token- we just had a baby, I stopped working, our finances are not in a place to get something huge.
I got this, I treasure it, and my son holds onto it when he nurses:

We also ended up getting one for each grandma too. I had gotten these for my SIL and MIL when my twin nephews were born, so they are becoming a new tradition.
