I have horrible name associations. I am a teacher and poor Hubby keeps suggesting names and I'm like no, I can't do that one, etc.

I like Avery. I think it's pretty.

What if you spelled Landry different? We have a Landree.

We also have an Amrey, like Avery, but a little more unique.

We also have an Aimsley. So precious.

Let me know if I'm way off your liking/taste or if we are getting somewhere. I need some distractions and researching baby names is helpful, ironically.

our last name also ends in "er" so summer and harper are out... naming is so much harder than I thought it would be!

My last name ends in "er" and we are considering some "er" first names. It doesn't bother me really.

I feel like I know a million baby Avery's. It's a pretty name but if you don't want something really popular I would pick something else.

What about Emery? I had a friend name her baby girl this recently and I though it was really pretty.

Just wanted to say that I love Landry or Landree. Yes there may be a restaurant with that name but as soon as that baby comes your family will think of her first.

My daughters name is the same as a city in our state with a not so great reputation but we still love her name and don't think about the city now at all.

we had a nightmare choosing a name. to be honest, you just need to pick what you like - don't worry about associations. every person you meet with have some association with your baby's name - eventually, you just have to kind of ignore it.

I also say pick what you like in lieu of 'popularity' too - our top names were Caroline, Emma and Olivia. We narrowed down to Caroline and Olivia, and went with Olivia. #4 last year! But my husband and I both agreed on it, so we didn't care. First thing my dad says - "like the show with the pig?" yup, like the show with the pig. But I love the name, so I don't care what anyone else thinks! Eventually, they'll learn to think, "oh, Olivia, our adorable grandchild" instead of just the pig Moral of that story..if you like Landry, go for it! People will 're-associate' it with your baby

We finally chose our girl name, that was really hard because I had so many associations. DH didn't understand why I didn't like a name because one of my second cousin's daughters was named that, or I knew a girl in high school with that name. The weirdest one was dogs with that name -- he suggested at least 3 girl names and we know people with dogs with that name. Maybe I was just being picky! But we FINALLY picked one with minimal association -- Katelyn Frances (the Frances was my mom's name, so it's a purposeful association).

Our boy name is a purposeful association for DH, but I just like the name a lot -- Derek John (he loves Derek Jeter, and John is a family name on his side). Just as long as nobody calls him DJ.

Good luck, it's really hard! The Social Security site has lists of the most popular names for every decade back to, I think, the 1880s. We combed through there and found some useful ideas.

@Coco Bee: That is so funny because my dad's dog's name is Zoe so that name was definitely out for us. That and Zooey Deschanel who I actually don't like at all.

(lol originally I wrote this as "my dad's name" ... uh, wrong.)

@jholler25: I'm with you on the no "-er" names - our last name ends in "ley", so all the "-ley" names are big no-nos to me. If you gravitate toward "-er" names, how about a "-en" or "-an" name? Like:

We had a really, really hard time agreeing on a name for LO. In the end we chose Charlotte and we call her Charlie.

I love androgynous names on little girls, but I know that's not for everyone. I LOVED Sawyer but DH nixed it before I even finished suggesting it.

I had the same hangup about the names rhyming. In the end, that's how Norah got vetoed because DH's name ends in -ra. I also didn't want the same first letter (B) so I didn't even include Brynn or Brenna, both of which I love.

@Rachel: lol yeah no

Oh and @jholler25 I totally understand because I banned names that start with an L (our last name does) or that sound too "rhymy" or end in an O (like our last name)

Personally, I think Holly Holler has a lot of potential.

Seriously though, girl names are HARD!
