I was diagnosed at around 26 weeks, just before Canadian Thanksgiving in October. I was devastated. Tears galore! I didn't even have any of the risk factors. I was immediately booked into the high risk clinic, but also had to see my regular OB (so twice the appointments).
I found the diet tough to handle, especially breakfast and limiting fruit. But once you figure it out, you get into a groove. My saving grace was peanut butter cookies that were just peanut butter and Splenda mixed together with an egg and vanilla and baked (so essentially carb-free!).
The prenatal clinic I was going to had a diabetes clinic I had to attend every two weeks. I had a growth ultrasound at each appointment. I was weighed, had my BP taken, and discussed numbers with a dietician in front of the rest of the group (not private unless you requested). I have white coat BP, and having it taken in front of a bunch of strangers didn't help. Once that was done, I had to meet with one of the endos (whichever was free from a floating group of doctors). Then I saw a perinatologist to discuss the u/s. Because I never saw the same doctor 2 appts in a row, continuity of care was severely lacking. My numbers might have been good in the eyes of a doctor one week, but not good enough for a different doctor the next time. I found that really hard to cope with. It was hard any given week to know whether I was doing well! All that being said, I received good care. I will go back because I like my OB/GYN who works out of that practice.
I had to go on insulin for my fasting numbers and for lunch. I ended up forgetting my lunch dose more often than not, and could still kept my lunch numbers under control - I think the week they based the prescription on was just a bad week. I found the insulin needles much less painful than the blood sugar test pokes! I thought it would be awful, but once I'd done it for a few days, and got over the fact that I was sticking a needle in my side, it was fine. I could even relax a little because I knew the insulin was keeping my numbers low. I had reduced sugar ice cream as a snack quite a few nights
My LO ended up being breech quite early on, and didn't move. I did get the feeling that they would induce around 38 weeks if it weren't for that...not sure how that would have played out because it was a non-issue. My baby was measuring about 6 lbs 8 oz at my last u/s 2 weeks before my c section, but ended up being 5lbs 8oz at birth.
One nice thing about the whole experience was that I only gained 15 lbs! That weight is gone, and I just want to lose extra weight now...
I had my follow up glucose test at 4 months, and I was so nervous that it would be bad, but results were normal. I thought maybe because I needed insulin, that I had undiagnosed pre-pregnancy diabetes or something, but it wasn't the case.
All this to say that I know what it feels like to go through this. It's not fun, and I struggled with the scheduling of my day and figuring out what to eat. I remember I went to a grocery store by myself one afternoon and was almost I tears in the produce section because I couldn't just buy a banana or some grapes - it felt so unfair that even healthy foods were restricted!

I failed my 3-hour test at 27 weeks as well. I was suprised by my diagnoses because I am in fairly good shape and not even close to overweight, so it was hard to come to terms with in the begining.
I met with a nutritionist and had to prick my finger 4 times a day (once first thing in the morning, then 2 hours after every meal). I didn't mind the diet, just a lot of protein and veggies. I only gained about 10lbs after being diagnosed.
My numbers were well controlled by my diet and by walking everyday that I could just be treated as a normal pregnancy. However, my OB would not let me go over my due date and I had to be induced. My induction didn't go well and my son was born via c-section after 28 hours at 9lbs 2oz (a couple days before his due date). Hang in there momma, you can do it!

@evansjamie: You can eat cereal but the portion will be so small...I skipped it because 1/2 or 3/4 of a cup of cereal was a tease!

@evansjamie: I think you will just have to play with your numbers for a while and learn what will/won't spike your numbers. I found that if I wanted to cheat and have a donut or whatever that I could just do some stairs at work and it would bring my numbers back down. Certain foods that spike some people's numbers won't always have the same effect on someone else.
It seemed so hard in the begining but became easier everyday! They made me test my numbers a day after I gave birth, but once they saw my numbers were back to normal, that was the end of it and it felt soooo good! If anything, it taught me that I had really bad eating habits before anyways so it helped me in the long run not to gain as much weight.

@evansjamie: I felt completely blindsided too, you are not alone! I would just talk with your OB about their policy on inducing because of GD. I will never know if my body would have done what it should have if they had let me go over my due date but in the end, getting my baby boy out was my main focus. If you ever need to vent or have questions, don't hesitate to ask!
