i've seen a lot going around about the TIME words to ban in 2015 poll where the word 'feminist' is in first place by a landslide.

Yeah the feminist one is freaking depressing. I can't even...(see what I did there? :-P) But seriously that makes me want to cry. As for most of the others? Please go away. Bae, yaaasss, literally, basic, said no one ever -- so sick of nearly all on the whole list!

This is just sad that so many people want to ban the word feminist. 
Also, some of those words I've never even heard of. What is "bae"? It's in second place and I don't even know what it means!

@.twist.: I don't think it started too long ago, I'm pretty sure I've only been hearing it for maybe a couple months? But that's enough, haha. Buzzfeed has been all over it, which is probably why I'm finding it so annoying...

Personally, I love the word "bae." It's not as bad as some of the words. It cracks me up for some reason.
To the feminist thing, I think that the word is abused or used wrongly by celebrities and media to the point that it's become muddled in its meaning. I feel like I need to read some Betty Friedan or Gloria Steinem whenever I hear it too frequently in the media.
Reading over the list, it sounds like words that Giuliana Rancic uses over and over again to try to sound so hip and cool instead it makes her look foolish for someone whose pushing 40.

ANYWAY. As for wanting to ban feminist/feminism. I think it's more from the approach of can all those random celebrities please stop making their positions and perceptions on feminism known? And can the media please stop making a big deal out of it? I'm lookin at you, Shailene Woodley. I don't think TIME wants to ban it as a topic of discussion, an important movement, an idea, etc. I just think there's been too much "celebrity gossip" surrounding it lately, and it's being kind of....overdone.

it is fun to make fun of silly made up terms, but what does it say when a serious word is added to the mix? that we view women's rights as silly or that we've come so far that the thought of needing to make a point of talking about women's rights is unnecessary? i'd like to say it's the latter, but i don't think we've come far enough where that's a reasonable explanation. i think so many people view the protection of women and their rights to be silly and pointless. it hurts my heart to think we don't value ourselves and other woman enough to respect the word, how far it's taken us, how far we still have to go.

Why is feminist in the lead? That's just dumb to ban a word that has done so much and brought so much progress for us. Why is cray cray not on the list? I voted for literally, it's used wrong all the time!

@mrs. bird: I agree, I don't think this was a good place for it. Either make the list silly or have it spark a serious discussion. Putting them together is just confusing and trivializes the more serious words, IMO.
@littlebug: Oh and Shailene Woodley needs to shush. Way to show everyone you have no idea what that word really means...

@Kimberlybee: I forget where I saw this, but I read somewhere that people use "literally" incorrectly so much, that the definitely of the word is going to be updated to reflect that "literally" can also mean "figuratively."

This makes me want to roar. Every other word on that list I could understand. I hate that feminist has become a dirty word. Seems like it's mostly because of people who don't actually understand what the meaning of the word is and we're having women debate who gets to call themselves a feminist and not.

@littlebug: i still call BS (with her views, not you!!). being a feminist doesn't mean you hate men, i love men! it means i love & respect women, too. it means i believe in access to education, to fair and equal pay, to healthcare- healthcare that doesn't penalize women for being born a woman by not covering all their healthcare needs, it means i believe in protecting a group of people who have been oppressed and making sure they have what they need to make strides toward equality in the future. i don't feel the need to define a certain percentage of myself as masculine or feminine, i am me, that is enough, i shouldn't need to, no one should. one's sex doesn't define them, it is a part of them, but to reduce someone to their sex and the social construct we've created for that gender is crap. we are better than that.

I feel like so many young girls just do not understand what this word is supposed to mean (if Hollywood is any indication, lol). But I do love what Sheryl Sandburg said, perfection: "It's a heavy word, feminism, but it's not one I think we should run from. I'm proud to be a feminist."
