I either live under a rock or am officially old - I don't know what half of these are!

@.twist.: it means 'that ho over there' and is used interchangeably with hoe/ho. @mrsjazz: I haaaaate that word with a passion. I feel bad for my DHs students, they get endless crap from me for using it walking around calling each other thot pockets, so demeaning.

@cascademom: haha, yes!!! Love Inigo Montoya! And I get so mad when people seem to think Feminist and Feminism imply man-hate or something! Grrrr.

Ugh, I voted for Bae. Makes me cringe every time I hear it. Literally

  5. MrsSCB

    pomelo / 5257 posts

@cascademom: Hahaha that was LITERALLY exactly what I was thinking!

  6. cascademom

@MrsSCB: Every single time it pops up, that's all I think about!

I voted for bae because ugh. But the fact that the word feminist is winning makes me sick. Why is it so bad to believe in equality? Combined with GamerGate and the reaction to the catcalling video, it makes me think that US culture is more misogynistic than I used to believe.

    @mrsjazz: Echoing your thoughts!

  9. yoursilverlining

    eggplant / 11824 posts

@MrsKoala: I agree about the US being misogynistic. The fact that feminism has become such a "bad word" with such negative and misinformed stereotypes surrounding it, while labels for women like "bitch" and "ho" have become commonplace, every day language is disheartening. To say the least.

  10. .twist.

    pineapple / 12802 posts

@yoursilverlining: No kidding. You can be a basic bitch, but not a feminist.

  11. LovelyPlum

    eggplant / 11408 posts

My issue with the word feminist is that popular usage seems to have changed in meaning with second wave feminism to now represent only a particular set of political views. I dislike the term feminism because it doesn't seem to allow for a range of opinions on certain women's issues. I would not say I am a feminist. I would say, though, that I am in favor of equal rights for women. Maybe it is a big difference, maybe not, but I think it has to do with connotation.

@.twist.: Exactly, you pretty much nailed it there. So depressing.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: yes! Can we just be done with sipping tea and throwing shade??!!!!

@plantains: oh and beat as in her face is beat...what happenedto your look great! Love your make up!

I give up on the word feminist. I believe in equality. But people get so damn worked up over what it means. I'm just going to stick to talking about specific issues - equal pay, for example.

I hate the word basic. This is a good read: http://nymag.com/thecut/2014/10/what-do-you-really-mean-by-basic-bitch.html

  20. hotchildinthecity

    nectarine / 2272 posts

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I believe bae "literally" means "before anyone else". It's not just short for babe or baby.

I like bae/basic/turnt. Guess I'm a little young at heart

    wonderful pea / 17279 posts

@hotchildinthecity: ohhhhh, really?! That's actually clever. I would love to know who was the very first person that came up with bae.

ETA: I found some details on it http://www.visualthesaurus.com/cm/dictionary/bae-watch-the-ascent-of-a-new-pet-name/

@mrsjazz: That was awesome. Thanks for sharing!

  24. plantains

    grapefruit / 4671 posts

@hotchildinthecity: @Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I think that is a myth sort of because bae has been around for ages and only in the last year or so when it became really popular did people come up with the 'before anyone/anything else' explanation.

@mrsjazz: Fantastic article! Thanks for sharing it!

@mrsjazz: Love that! Thanks for posting, I just shared it on Facebook

Also, last night I was trying to explain this article to my H but it was hard because he's apparently really out of the loop on these terms. I was all worked up, saying, "And they put the word FEMINIST in with all these dumb words, like "bae" and "turnt" and "basic"..." And he was like, "Wait, whaaa???? I don't know what any of those things mean??!" Get with it, man! Or bae! haha

I also saw this last night and it made me glad I voted for bae.

    @mrsjazz: that was deep!

@plantains: the link I posted on bae says exactly what you just said.

bumping to add that Time has now posted an apology for including the word "feminist" in this poll.

@mrsjazz: I'm glad they apologized, but I feel like the line about how the nuance was lost minimizes their poor choice is selecting the word. I wish they'd just owned their BS a little more.

  32. MrsSCB

    pomelo / 5257 posts

@mrsjazz: I hadn't seen that, thanks for sharing! I think agree with you, @mrs. bird, I wish they'd just apologized without trying to explain what they "meant" to do. Regardless, it was a poor decision and it would have been nice if they'd left it at that. Their version just reads a little too close to "I'm sorry you were offended" -- not totally heartfelt, haha.
