Yesterday, I took two HPTs which were both BFPs! I immediately called my doctor to set up a blood test. The receptionist told me that an appointment wasn't necessary, I could just drop in during their hours. So I went in early this morning expecting to get a blood test, but was informed that they only provide urine tests for drop ins and if I wanted a blood test I would need to schedule it with my doctor. Grrrr. I ended up taking the urine test which was also positive, BUT I would feel a lot more confident if I had gotten the blood test. I feel like with my husband's history of MF issues, a blood test should have been done. I have already emailed my doctor to request one. So I thought I would take it to HB! When you found out you were pregnant, did you get a standard urine test or a blood test to confirm?

@Warbler: Blood tests (x2) but I was seeing an RE. If I had been with my regular doctor it would just have been a urine test.

I had two blood tests done because I'm an IF patient. If you'd feel more comfortable getting a blood test push for one! It was very reassuring for me to see my betas double.

Wow, congrats!! I think if you're working with an RE, a blood test is standard. But at an OB's office, it's just a pee test usually.

Just at home pee test. They didn't test my blood or pee at the doctor.

Never tested at the doctor, they just saw me at an 8 week appointment to confirm.

I was seeing an RE so I had a blood test 3 times to confirm my numbers doubled. My RE plan was to see me 2 weeks after my transfer but they said I could come in early if I got a BFP.

I only had betas done with one of my 4 pregnancies. I found them too stressful so I declined them later. So just urine for 3.

Meh, sounds like you're pregnant to me!
I peed on a stick about 9 days DPO, called my dr and set up an appt for...7 weeks or so (I go in a little early due to RPL) and they took blood then. They check my progesterone since i've had that be low before.

It's reassuring to know that a lot of you just had urine tests! We didn't undergo any treatments, so it makes sense that they didn't order a blood test. I am just so terrified that something will go wrong. Should make for an interesting 9 months!

I did go for blood my first time, but second time I was fine with urine, I knew I was pregnant!

For my first LO, they didn't even want to see me for a urine test. The nurse seemed confused when I asked. She was like well didn't you take a test at home? But in TTC for our second, we've been working with an RE and they always have me come in for blood tests when I get a BFP. (we've had two miscarriages)

I've never got a pregnancy confirmed by a Dr/midwife... I know what a BFP looks like
but if you'd be more comfortable with a blood test, definitely get one!

My gp actually set up my blood tests 1st time I got pregnant (I got 2 to see the #s double), but then we lost that pregnancy & same Dr set up standing order for the lab to draw blood to watch the #s go back down. 2nd time I was w/ an RE & they did 2 blood tests & I also alternated draws at the gp's lab for additional blood tests b/c of the previous m/c as well as bleeding early in this pregnancy. No one ever gave me a hard time for all the betas, I'm surprised some drs do. Does sound like you're pg, though, so best of luck!

Update: My OB agreed with me about the blood test and ordered one. I just got my results back and my number was 340. I'm pretty certain I ovulated around Valentine's Day, so I think that number is good! I'm still waiting for my doctor to get back to me with his thoughts, but I feel like I can breathe easy now.

ETA: That's a great number! Blood tests are nice...but don't really have a distinctive advantage over the urine tests. Wishing you a H&H 9 months!!!!

Ugh, so my doctor looked at my results and wants me to repeat the test on Thursday. He said although it is positive, it is "very low, questionable very early pregnancy". I thought based on how far along I am it was a good number. I'm sure he's just be cautious, but now I'm worried again!

The think with blood tests is that you usually have to do two, they want to make sure the numbers double in 48 hours.

@Warbler: it is common to have two tests to be sure the number doubles. I didn't think your result sounded low though! My 14 DPO beta was 269 and I'm having twins. Check out betabase.info and look at the average numbers based on DPO. That might give you some reassurance.

@Leialou: Thank you for the link! I was looking for it all over HB last night! Yeah, I didn't think it was low either, and according to Betabase, I'm above average for that DPO.

@Warbler: The number sounds good to me! When was your LMP? If you ovulated "late" (if you have cycles that are longer than 28 days) that could be why he thinks its low, since most dr's only look at LMP and not ovulation date as it can be hard to pinpoint.

@KT326: Well my LMP was 1/29, but I just told him I was two days late and took a HPT. He didn't even ask about my LMP, cycle lengths or ovulation date.

@Warbler: What an insensitive thing for your doctor to tell you without any background info on when you might have ovulated! Ugh, sometimes regular OBs (I'm assuming he is not an RE) have no clue.
So if you ovulated on 2/14, this makes you 16 DPO? I think your beta sounds good to me. Fingers crossed for doubling on Thursday! -
@trailmix: I emailed him back and told him I didn't agree based on my LMP and o date. His response was basically "oh ok that range is normal. Let's go with that".
Yeah, I think I'll be switching OBs!

@Warbler: He doesn't sound incompetent, but maybe handled that a bit insensitively? Most OB's (as far as I know) don't often check early betas...so the numbers he's most familiar with are probably from draws done later, when there were issues like bleeding or questions about growth based on dates...if that makes any sense. You might give him a chance to apologize for making you worry needlessly...and definitely change OBs if you think he's a jerk!

I took a HPT at home and got blood work the same day to confirm my pregnancy at my RE. The only "benefit" of the blood test was they could tell me my hCG level... but as long as it's over 5 it doesn't really matter what that number is, only of it doubles, so it was pretty close to useless for me haha.
