I don't really want to go out this year so I was trying to figure out something yummy to eat after church on Christmas Eve. What do you eat on Christmas Eve?

Following for ideas! We usually travel and do Christmas Eve at my husband's grandparents house. Dinner there is roast beef and sides.
Since it's our first Christmas Eve at home I'm trying to think of fun ideas. Maybe roasted Dungeness crab.

my family does a big heavy appetizer dinner every Christmas Eve after church before presents. There are like 40 of us, so it is way easier. Everyone brings one, including a CFA nugget tray for the "kids", but really we all eat those suckers.

@Smurfette: same! My parents do a lot of heavy appetizers too - like velveeta/rotel dip and chips, mini sandwiches that we make ourselves, dips, and of course a CFA platter of nuggets that we all love. Oh and lots of margaritas!
My MIL is making prime rib with mashed potatoes.

My family does a traditional eastern european meatless from the earth meal:
bean and mushroom soup
sauerkraut baboki cottage cheese baboki
sauerkraut, potato and cheese, and lakvar pierogies
and poppy seed roll for dessert
oh and lasagna for my brothers in law and nephews who didn't grow up on the eastern european feast mentioned above
probably not helpful

My family always goes out to eat Mexican food (not sure why). We spend Christmas Eve with my ILs now and they make prime rib.

Do a potluck with my mom's family on the day before Christmas Eve we do crab.

We have Christmas Eve with my DH's family; mostly Filipino food like pancit, lumpia, various meat dishes, dessert and most likely a ham.

We travel for Christmas (plane flight). With my family, they do heavy appetizers as another person mentioned - crab dip, sausage balls, veggie tray, cheese, etc. With DH's family they do a few different types of soups with bread.

We do Christmas with my ILs that day and drive home that night to have Christmas morning in our own home. MIL basically does Thanksgiving again! My mom always did appetizers and I like that. We will probably start doing that on NYE since we don't go anywhere then!

@snarkybiochemist: Ahhh! I need to know where your recipes come from! We're mostly vegetarian and I love sauerkraut, but I've never figured out what else it goes with that isn't sausage. What is baboki? I love poppy seed roll! Mmmmm.
To answer the question, fish. I'm doing a much smaller scale version of the Feast of the Seven Fishes. So, salmon dip for a starter and then a filet of Mahi Mahi or something like that plus salad. We always had oyster stew growing up, but not everyone in my family likes it and I prefer to eat my quota of cream for the meal on top of pumpkin pie.

We do fondue with DH's family if we are in the US and KFC with mine if we are in new zealand

@honeybear: baboki are bread balls that you cook in boiling water and then pan fry and mix with sauerkraut or cottage cheese, we buy the baboki from an eastern orthadox church as for the pierogies I have made my own on years we can't get to my family for christmas and here is the recipe I have used:
http://barefeetinthekitchen.com/how-to-make-pierogies-recipe/
I make my mashed potatoes with cream cheese, my grandma uses cottage cheese since farmers cheese is harder to come by but in either case you want the potato filling to be on the drier side and cold, don't use to much liquid in the potatoes if you are stuffing with sauerkraut make sure it is good and dry

@snarkybiochemist: Thanks! I've never made pierogies before, but I've had them and they are so good! I'll have to try to make some and put sauerkraut in.

We always go to my mom's for my immediate family celebration following early church. Menu is always soup (oyster stew & one other) plus heavy apps. Followed by drinks and games in PJs!

Spaghetti and meatballs, with caesar salad and garlic bread. Christmas Eve is DH's birthday, and that's his favorite meal. It is hard to celebrate his birthday on the day itself because of all the other things going on, so I try to make sure no matter what he gets his meal!

We go to my aunts house for the Feast of the 7 Fishes... shrimp cocktail, fried shrimp, raw clams, lots of other appetizers, big salad, crabs and spaghetti, flounder, smelts, baccala, scallops, crab imperial, Calamari salad and a huge dessert table because her cousin works at a bakery and my grandmother make hundreds of italian christmas cookies each year.

I love hearing about these traditions! My family always does dungeness crab (we live in Northern CA) but growing up we sometimes did shepherds pie. My best friends family does lasagna.

It'll be my parents and my family (DH and DS1 and 2) and we'll start with a charcuterie plate after church while making the rest of the meal. For dinner we are having beef tenderloin, brussel sprouts with bacon, and 2 kinds of stuffing. Basically we're having a stuffing off to see who's is the best. And really not sure my boys will eat any of that so we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

I'm reluctantly hosting dinner for the ILs at our house on Christmas Eve and I'm doing a honey-baked ham, scalloped potatoes, roasted carrots and green beans, and dinner rolls. I used to like it when my family would do what a lot of PPs mentioned and have a ton of different appetizers though! Shrimp cocktail, cheese and crackers, chips/bread and dips, cocktail meatballs or the little hot dogs, etc.

We go to my mom's and usually do turkey/dressing sandwiches, meatballs, smokies, chicken wings, cheesy potatoes. Nothing fancy.
Our own tradition is to make homemade pizza before we open presents - Chicken Alfredo pizza for me, and a 'meat lovers' for DH.

We steam lobsters if we're home for Christmas Eve. And have twice baked potatoes on the side. So, not exactly an easy meal, lol.

Either pasta with clam sauce or fancy Mac and cheese. No particular reason why!

@IRunForFun: you are pregnant so I vote you get to pick the menu!

Tamales, it's a southwestern thing. I got them last week, they are waiting for me in the freezer. I made them one year- never again
Usually we also make a crockpot of Gluhwine (hot German mulled wine) and walk around the neighborhood to see the luminarias.

@Smurfette: Haha, in that case I vote I order Chinese and don't cook!!

Growing up with the Italian Xmas Eve with all the fish - but now we keep things simpler. We're at my SIL's this year and she's doing a roast but when it's just us, we usually go out to a diner then drive around to look at the lights.

Beef bourginon- it's fancy but it can sit in he crockpot while we are at church!

Prime rib, mashed potatoes, creamed kale. We have salami and cheese as appetizers. Dark chocolate m&ms for dessert. But we don't go to church, so we have the time.

After church we go over to my parents for meat pies, seafood chowder, and pizza (for the kids and seafood haters). Family and friends pop in throughout the night and it's low key, really nice

No tradition, but I was just thinking I might grab some easy frozen TJ meals....
nectarine / 2018 posts
We do meatballs and pasta with garlic bread. It was a tradition DH had growing up that we decided to stick with. We make the meatballs in the crock pot which makes it a really hands off meal.

Last year we started the tradition of Indian takeout mmmm. We ate it in the car and then drove the lights display on the way to family ham dinner. We are vegetarian so we ate first! I hope to do something similar this year. I'd like to skip family ham dinner altogether but it is kind of an obligation to attend...

Our nanny is Swedish so we've talked about doing a Swedish meal with meatballs, gravy, mashed potatoes... a la Ikea!

We spend Christmas with DH's extended family, and they always have mini sandwiches with your choice of shaved ham or sliced turkey breast (both warm) and then a variety of sides; veggies, salads, deviled eggs, etc. Christmas cookies for dessert.
